Life & Work with Alessandra Silva of Minneapolis/Saint Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alessandra Silva

Hi Alessandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Alessandra Silva

As a dynamic dancer and a studented fashion designer for two years, I have worked alongside Maria Helena Souza at GNT, immersing myself in the lively world of creativity with various artists and performers. My excellent organizational abilities, paired with a deep understanding of dance—especially the vibrant Samba no pé—fuel my passion. While in Brazil, I dedicated months to collaborating with Teatro Popular Solano Trindade in Embu das Artes, São Paulo, on a community project that intensified my love for dance. After moving to Minnesota, I participated in events coordinated by Robert Everest, including the thrilling Carnaval Brasileiro in the Twin Cities and the joyous Festa de São João. Furthermore, I teamed up with Karen Quiroz to establish Samba Meu, an energetic homage to Brazilian culture that showcased a rich blend of music, dance, visual arts, and exquisite cuisine. I’m kicking off this project by taking some private samba classes and attending a few workshops. This idea originated in 2023, and I have been collaborating with samba professionals from Rio de Janeiro, first through the Sambe-se project and now with Alexander Silva. Aquarela of Samba has been blending lively colors, energetic shapes, and the spirit of Brazilian dance with tunes and artists who are truly passionate about Brazil’s music, dance, and rhythm.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Samba is a vibrant and lively dance that reflects a rich cultural heritage. While it may not be on everyone’s radar in certain areas, there is a world of joy and creativity waiting to be discovered. Introducing people to the rhythms and movements of Samba can be a gradual process, but the rewards—such as fitness, fun, and a deeper appreciation for this beautiful art form—are well worth the effort.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am dedicated to assisting students in perfecting the intricate footwork, bodily movements, rhythm, and confidence essential for embodying the spirit of samba. Having trained under some of Brazil’s finest sambistas, I possess a deep understanding and appreciation for samba’s cultural significance. Beyond just dance, I foster environments where individuals can connect, experience joy, and honor diversity. What sets me apart is my background rooted in cultural diversity—I am a mixed woman with indigenous, Afro-descendant, and European heritage, who grew up in the working-class town of Embu das Arts Sao Paulo. I express myself through dance as a form of communication and celebration. My upbringing was filled with dancing alongside family, within the community, and in the streets, rather than in studios. Although I aspired to be a dancer, circumstances led me down different paths. Now, as I raise my daughter on my own, I recognize that pursuing one’s dreams is challenging. However, samba presents me with a chance to live that dream and share it with others.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
In my opinion, the Twin Cities present an intriguing blend of attributes:These cities boast a lively arts scene that resonates with Brazil’s creative spirit, showcasing life through artistic endeavors. The diverse community fosters connections among folks from different backgrounds, creating a rich cultural fabric where art forms like Samba can thrive. With plenty of parks and lakes, the Twin Cities provide a refreshing escape into nature, offering a striking contrast to Brazil’s vibrant urban environment.
The shift from Brazil’s warm weather to the frigid winters of the Twin Cities can be tough, necessitating big adjustments in both lifestyle and attitude.
Socially, while the cultural richness is clear, the more low-key vibe might feel a bit less energetic compared to the bustling street life that’s typical in Brazil.
