Hidden Gems: Meet Suchitra Raghavan of Kalkiartz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suchitra Raghavan

Hi Suchitra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tanjore painting has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Originating from the historic town of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, this art form is known for its rich colors, intricate details, and the use of 22ct gold foil and teakwood frames that gives it a distinctive brilliance. Growing up surrounded by this tradition, I was captivated by its beauty and the deep cultural heritage.

Over the years, I’ve dedicated myself to mastering its techniques, studying the history, and bringing these timeless stories to life. My work is often inspired by Hindu mythology, featuring gods, goddesses, and serene landscapes that evoke a sense of divinity and peace. Each painting I create feels like a connection between the past and the present, keeping this cherished art form alive.

Beyond creating my own pieces, I find great joy in sharing this tradition with others. Whether through teaching or collaborating, I believe in preserving and passing on the knowledge of Tanjore painting. If you’d like to learn more or explore ways to work together, I’d love to connect!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any artistic journey, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Tanjore painting is a time-intensive and intricate art form, requiring patience, precision, and a deep understanding of traditional techniques. Finding the right materials, especially authentic gold foil, teakwood frames and natural colors, has sometimes been a challenge.

Beyond the technical aspects, building awareness and appreciation for this art in a fast-paced, modern world has been another hurdle. Many people are unfamiliar with the depth and history of Tanjore painting, so educating and inspiring them has been an important part of my journey.

Despite these challenges, my passion keeps me going. Every piece I create is a reminder of why I fell in love with this art in the first place. And seeing others appreciate, learn, and engage with it makes all the struggles worthwhile.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kalkiartz?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about this city is its vibrant and diverse community. There’s a deep appreciation for culture, art, and creativity, which makes it a wonderful place for an artist like me. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with people who genuinely value traditional art forms like Tanjore painting, and that has been incredibly rewarding. The city’s support for local artists, whether through events, galleries, or community programs, is something I truly appreciate.

As for what I like least, I’d say the challenge lies in increasing awareness and appreciation for traditional Indian art. While there’s a strong art scene, niche art forms like Tanjore painting are not as widely recognized. I’d love to see more platforms and opportunities for cultural diversity in the arts, allowing lesser-known traditions to gain more visibility.

That said, I believe every city evolves, and I’m excited to be part of this artistic journey, bringing more awareness to the beauty of Indian heritage.
