Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Amundson
Steve, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I had just graduated college from Bemidji State University in the Spring of 2007 w/ a Business Administration & Finance degree. Not sure of what I wanted to do for a career yet, I decided to work my normal summer job at Timbuktu Marina (7 years) to see what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Later that summer I came home from work and my Dad Joe said, “why don’t we go look at these resorts for sale…he had mentioned 3 that were currently for sale, and I said what for?!? and He said, I was thinking of doing a family business again and want to do it with you…I said ABSOLUTELY!!! so long story short, we settled on spring bay resort, it had 6 little cabins, 3 small fishing boats, and an owners house, and room for expansion…fast forward 17 years, we have over 20 cabins, 20 boats and pontoons, seasonal camp spots, seasonal dock spots, and a great guide service
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Its had its ups and downs, but overall its been a great life and a great way to raise a family. I always hear the comment, I wanna buy a resort when I retire…I have to laugh histarically at this….definitely don’t buy a resort then!!! HAHAHA
If you ever find yourself without something to do, just wait 5 minutes!
We’ve been impressed with Spring Bay Resort, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
over 20 cabins and 20 boats, guide service, seasonal dock spots, seasonal camp spots, gas, bait, ice…Id say our old fashioned service and cabins set us apart. we are very fishing orientated as well, so we can help out tremendously with that. Id say Im most proud of what we’ve built, no even just business wise, but the friendships we’ve built with so many great people that we consider family now, had we never done the resort, we would have never encountered this many great people in our lifetime. We cant wait to have the kids take over when the time comes.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just work hard and be willing to put in the work….the world is full of doers and donters….be a doer!! Hindsight is 20/20, just learn from your mistakes.
