Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Palmquist
Hi Jill , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started at Life Time as a freelancer. The more time I spent with the company, the more I realized the good they were doing in the world., and how it aligned with what I also wanted to do. Plus people were fun and the place was so cool. We got to wear leggings to work before athlesiure was even cool 🙂 I never really had any desire to climb a corporate ladder, I just wanted to write…my gift and skills lined up with what the company needed….that plus a cheerful attitude and my position in the company effortlessly grew.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
oh, there were lots of struggles. You can’t hang out at a 3 billion dollar, 40,000 team member company and expect there not to be. The wrong people were in the wrong jobs sometimes,- never anyone’s fault- or people weren’t clear on roles or expectations. This sounds so corporate and boring but it comes down to relationships- humans trying to work with other humans. You figure it out. I was lucky enough to have people around me show me how to do it diplomatically and with care. (most of the time…there’s. story going around that one day I told another writer her work was poop. I say i said THE PROJECT was poop.) I can understand if you want to leave that last part out!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a writer. I’ve always had a sign on my desk that says “My only vocation is to bear witness to the glimpses of God I’ve been allowed to catch.” Which means I really try to be a noticer ….and then put what I notice into essay like objects. do this in Life Time’s marketing…translating what I see and hear from our members…and I was also afforded the opportunity to do this for a coffee table book called “In This Lifetime.” A book that’s basically both a timeline and tapestry of the beauty and brevity of life. I’m super proud of that. I don’t know too many people who get to use their gift in this way, with a company as your angel investor. I know how blessed and lucky I am.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We’re well on our way with the changes AI is bringing to the creative world….I believe that will make some of the work we have to do easier and faster and give us more time for the work we want to do….the work where we engage our hearts and souls… From another angle, when it comes to Life Time…we’re so much more than a gym….we’re a space and community for so many people. I think we”re getting to the point we’ve had enough of this isolation era, and that we’re going to realize/remember we’re wired for connection and community. I hope people find and then spend even more time in places like ours. we need each other. 🙂
