Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kayla Kvell
Hi Dr. Kayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the medical field has been anything but linear, but the driving force behind it has always been my mother. For decades leading up to her death, I watched her slip through the cracks of the medical system—misdiagnosed, dismissed, and offered nothing but an ever-growing list of pharmaceutical drugs. She passed away at just 52 years old. While her death was heartbreaking, it also gave me purpose: to ensure that others don’t suffer the same fate. My mission is to help people feel their best now and provide them with the knowledge and tools to age well and thrive.
I spent nearly a decade working in an emergency department, gaining invaluable skills and experience. But over time, I realized I was providing the same kind of care my mother received—quick fixes that patched symptoms without addressing the bigger picture. At the same time, I was diving deeper into health and wellness, searching for answers to my own struggles. That journey led me to an incredible opportunity to work with some of the Minnesota Vikings players, helping them optimize their performance and recovery. It was then that everything clicked—true health isn’t about reacting to disease; it’s about proactively building a strong foundation for a vibrant life.
That realization led me to start Sigma Health, where I bridge the gap between traditional medicine and wellness optimization. My goal is to empower people from all walks of life to take control of their health, so they can feel, perform, and live at their best.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges in preventative medicine is explaining why we don’t accept traditional health insurance. Most people are used to relying on their insurance for routine care, so the idea of paying out of pocket can be puzzling.
What many don’t realize is that health insurance often limits the care you receive. Insurers cover only those treatments deemed “medically necessary,” which can restrict the tests and prescriptions available to you. I like to compare it to car insurance: in a major accident, you’re relieved to have it, but you wouldn’t expect it to pay for regular oil changes or routine maintenance.
Additionally, while celebrities and athletes are admired for their remarkable health and youthful appearance, their secret isn’t just about genetics—it’s about the proactive care they choose. Instead of using traditional insurance, they work with cash-based private providers who can address issues well before they become “medically necessary.” This approach allows for a level of care that prioritizes long-term well-being, and it’s exactly the kind of service I offer to all of my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sigma Health challenges the traditional, reactive healthcare model by offering proactive, personalized care. Services include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (for both men and women), testosterone optimization, menopause support, metabolic psychiatry, medical weight loss, peptides, and biohacking strategies — all designed to help clients feel and perform at their absolute best. The practice emphasizes education, empowering clients to understand their bodies beyond standard lab ranges and cookie-cutter treatments. At Sigma Health, wellness isn’t about settling for “normal” — it’s about achieving optimal.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Great question. I really believe we’re on the cusp of a huge shift toward preventative and longevity-focused medicine. People are starting to wake up to the reality that everyday choices—like eating ultraprocessed foods or being exposed to microplastics—can seriously impact our health and that of our loved ones.
I’ve also noticed more people questioning the traditional model of care. There’s a growing awareness of how much influence pharma-funded companies and committees have over our health and the treatments available to us. Because of that, more people are seeking out private providers like me. While I might not treat every condition, I focus on consulting with you and advocating for the care that truly fits your needs.
Ultimately, your health is your most important asset, and you deserve a provider who truly cares about you. I want you to feel empowered and supported every step of the way on your health journey. This isn’t just about quick fixes—it’s about building a relationship where you’re heard, understood, and guided toward a healthier future. I see healthcare as a partnership, where every conversation, every consultation, and every check-up is an opportunity to tailor care specifically for you. In the end, it’s about transforming the way we think about health—from a reactive, one-size-fits-all model to one that’s personal, compassionate, and built on genuine connection.
