Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Hetterick
Hi Josh, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got into the sport of Handball back in 2008 during the Bejing Summer Olympics. I saw Handball on TV during the Olympics and I knew I had to start playing. Shortly after, myself and a bunch of people from a Burnsville Rec Center called “The Garage” reached out to the USA Handball Federation (USA Team Handball) to see how to get started. They connected us with athletes from around Minnesota who either played back in their home country or have played for USATH national affiliated teams. From there, we started Minnesota Team Handball Club and since then we’ve been growing and promoting thew great sport of Handball!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggles I’ve seen with the club is support from businesses and organizations. With Handball not being a popular sport in the USA, but being very popular in European countries, most people in America don’t see a benefit to contribute or support to our non profit sports club. We are so thankful to have dedicated and passionate members of the team to help keep this club going and continuing to grow this sport in the USA.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
By day, I’m a Personal Trainer at a local Minnesota gym. When I’m not there, I’m working hard to keep Minnesota Team Handball Club a healthy and competitive non profit sports club. I’m proud that this Handball club brings together people from all walks of life, from a variety of countries, yet we all come together for the passion of Handball. What sets us apart is our bond as a team. Not many USA Handball clubs make it past 10+ years of existing and we are one that’s bond is unbreakable.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
In the 17 years of the clubs existence, I have never missed a tournament with the club. I’ve traveled and represented the club as a player for every tournament it’s been in. Although, injuries have kept me from playing in every game (even if it wasn’t my call to not play).
