Community Highlights: Meet Susan Abi of Golden Kids Behavioral Therapy.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Abi.

Hi Susan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started in social work, where I had the opportunity to support children with various disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, and oppositional defiant disorder. I’ve always had a passion for helping children and their families, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with kids in a meaningful way.

What led me to where I am today was a happy accident—my husband introduced me to the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and I immediately felt drawn to it. I saw how powerful ABA could be in helping children gain independence, build communication skills, and thrive in everyday life. That introduction opened the door to a career path that combined both my passion for helping others and my desire to see real, measurable progress in children’s lives.

Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to learning, growing, and supporting families through ABA. Every step has been rewarding, and I’m grateful to be doing work that makes a difference.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but it’s been meaningful.

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to support children with complex needs while also being there for their families emotionally. Every child is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Early on, I had to learn how to adapt quickly, stay patient, and always keep the child’s dignity and individuality at the center of my work.

Another major challenge was transitioning from social work into ABA, and even more so—stepping into the world of business for the first time. Starting my own practice or service was a brand-new experience. I had to learn how to navigate billing, generate funding, and manage the financial side of things—all while still being fully present for the families I served. There were times I had to dip into my personal finances just to keep things running. That was a tough and humbling experience, but it showed me how dedicated I truly am to this work.

It’s been a journey filled with learning curves, moments of doubt, and a lot of growth. Balancing the emotional weight of the work with the pressures of running a business hasn’t always been easy—but every struggle has made me stronger and more resourceful. And despite the obstacles, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come and even more excited about where I’m headed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Golden Kids Behavioral Therapy.?
Golden Kids Behavioral Therapy is a dedicated and compassionate organization that provides ABA therapy services to children with special needs, ages 2 to 10. Our mission is to empower children to reach their full potential by offering individualized, evidence-based therapy in a supportive and family-centered environment.

We specialize in working with children diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, and other developmental delays. What sets us apart is our holistic, team-based approach. Our team includes Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), and licensed social workers who collaborate closely to design and implement customized treatment plans that address each child’s unique needs.

At Golden Kids, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all model. We take the time to understand each child—what motivates them, what challenges them, and what makes them thrive. We also work hand-in-hand with families, offering support, training, and open communication every step of the way.

What I’m most proud of brand-wise is the heart behind everything we do. Golden Kids is built on love, resilience, and a deep belief in every child’s potential. We’re known for going above and beyond—not just delivering therapy, but building trust, celebrating small wins, and creating a safe space where children feel seen, heard, and supported.

To anyone learning about Golden Kids for the first time, I want you to know: we’re here for your child’s growth, your family’s journey, and your peace of mind. Our services are more than therapy—they’re a partnership rooted in hope, compassion, and real, lasting change.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been incredibly blessed to have a strong support system throughout this journey, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without the people who have supported, guided, and believed in me.

First and foremost, my husband has played a huge role in my success. He introduced me to the field of ABA and encouraged me to pursue it professionally. He’s been by my side through every step, from launching Golden Kids Behavioral Therapy to supporting the day-to-day realities of running a business.

My mother, Sadiya, has also been one of my biggest cheerleaders. Her constant encouragement gave me the confidence to follow my passion and trust that I was capable of building something meaningful. Her belief in me kept me grounded and motivated.

I also want to give a very special thank you to Charmaine Sweeney, our Clinical Supervisor at Golden Kids. Charmaine plays an essential role in ensuring the clinic runs smoothly, ethically, and with the highest standards of care. Her guidance, professionalism, and presence have made me feel incredibly supported—not just as a business owner, but as a fellow professional dedicated to helping children thrive. Charmaine’s leadership has truly helped shape the heart and success of our team.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our amazing team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts, RBTs, and licensed social workers. Their dedication, compassion, and expertise are what make Golden Kids the safe, supportive, and effective environment that it is.

And finally, I want to recognize the families and children we serve. They are the reason we do this work. Their trust, resilience, and growth inspire us daily, and we are honored to be part of their journey.
