Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Siegel.
Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
ProSkin Esthetics and Laser Center was founded in 2010 by my dad during a particularly difficult time —the recession. At that point, he was going through some personal life changes and knew he wanted to make a career shift. Laser Hair Removal was starting to emerge as a growing industry, and after a lot of research, he decided to pursue it. He went to laser school and became certified, but starting a business during a recession posed some serious challenges. Funding was tight, and securing a loan from the bank was almost impossible due to the economic climate. We had very limited resources, and the financial hurdles were daunting.
I was in a career I wasn’t passionate about, so I decided to join my dad in this new venture. I enrolled in esthetics school to get my license and be a part of this fresh opportunity. Once we were both trained, we were ready to open our doors. We worked with whatever we had, starting small with the hope that our hard work and dedication would pay off.
The beginning was tough. We had to wear many hats, balancing everything from client care to marketing and management with a small team. But the demand for laser services grew quickly, and within three years, our little team expanded from two to five people. As business boomed, we quickly outgrew our initial location. The space that had once seemed like plenty became cramped, and we had to find a new, larger location to continue serving our growing clientele.
With the rapid growth of our business, we also had to adapt to the changing industry. The demand for laser treatments was so high that it became essential for all of us estheticians to be trained as laser technicians. This meant a significant amount of additional training for the entire team, but it was necessary to keep up with client needs and industry trends. As a result, we became a fully integrated team, all capable of performing both esthetic services and laser treatments.
Looking back, it’s incredible how far we’ve come. From those humble beginnings, navigating financial struggles and the challenges of a recession, to the growing, thriving business we have today—it’s been a true labor of love. Our dedication, the bond between my dad and me, and our incredible team have been key to our success.
As of January 2024, I’m proud to say that I became the owner of our Lakeville location! It’s been an amazing journey to take this next step, full of gratitude and learning experiences (both good and bad), and I’m excited for what the future holds for us as we continue to grow and serve our community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting and growing a business has never been a smooth road, and opening the Lakeville location in 2024 certainly hasn’t been an exception. The economy is still recovering, and unfortunately, the services we provide aren’t always seen as a necessity for most people. It’s tough when you’re offering services that people may not prioritize when money is tight. However, we’re pushing through the challenges, adapting where we can, and making it happen.
I truly believe that starting a business is rarely a smooth ride. There are always obstacles—whether it’s financial struggles, market conditions, or even just balancing day-to-day operations. But what has kept me going and made the difficult moments more manageable is the incredible team I have. The girls at both of our locations are, in my opinion, the best in the industry. They work hard, support each other, and have my back no matter what. Their dedication makes my job easier and, honestly, a lot more enjoyable. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work alongside. It’s because of them that we’re able to continue pushing forward, even when things are tough.
Oh, and my dad—he is truly the backbone of all of this. Without him, none of this would have been possible. His vision and persistence laid the foundation for everything we’ve built. His support and guidance have been instrumental in getting us through the toughest times.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When it comes to risk-taking, I believe it’s an essential part of growth—whether in business or life in general. I wouldn’t describe myself as someone who takes risks without careful thought, but I also understand that without taking calculated risks, there would be no opportunity for progress or innovation. Every major step we’ve taken at ProSkin has involved some level of risk, but those risks have been necessary to help us grow and evolve.
For example, opening our Lakeville location in 2024 was a significant risk. The economy was still recovering, and with the services we provide not always being seen as an immediate necessity, there was and is still a lot of uncertainty. But we saw a gap in the market and knew that our services could truly benefit the community there. Even though the financial climate wasn’t ideal, we decided to take the plunge, trusting in our experience and the quality of our work.
Another risk we took early on was deciding to invest in advanced laser technology and offer more specialized services like laser hair removal and anti-aging treatments. At the time, it was a emerging industry, and there were risks associated with investing in cutting-edge equipment and training a team to use it. But we believed in staying ahead of the curve and providing the best results for our clients, and those risks have paid off in the long run.
I think of risk as an investment in the future. Sometimes it’s scary, but it’s also essential to think long-term and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Risks also teach you to be adaptable and resourceful, especially when things don’t go as planned. What’s important is having a great team to back you up, being strategic in how you approach risks, and always being willing to learn from both successes and mistakes.
Ultimately, I think risk-taking is all about balance—taking bold steps when necessary, but also knowing when to proceed cautiously. It’s about understanding the potential rewards while being prepared for the challenges that might come along the way.
