Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Emmons.
Hi Tim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up I remember my godparents buying me a guitar to replace an old beat up guitar that I used to play with. I was about 8 years old at the time, and for me that’s when it started. I tell people that I was an oops kid when I was born. My mom and dad were in their 40’s. My sisters were 16+ years older than me. With my parents being older, and more established at the time, I remember taking trips to Branson, MO and Nashville, TN. I enjoyed going to shows and getting autographs from the performers. When I was home I would pretend to play on stage. I would set up a boombox with detachable speakers for my sound system. I would strum a guitar while cranking an Alabama tape and singing along.
I played guitar in a punk band in high school. I didn’t do much musically from are 17-25 as I was pretty involved in the National Guard. I got out with the intent to play music on the weekends in a band. We played our first gig New Years Eve 1999. Due to family life, attempting to raise three small children at the time, the band dissolved shortly after. It wasn’t until about 2016 that I truly started investing my time into music again. I was going through an unexpected divorce and it was a way to process what I was feeling. I began writing songs again. My first real gig in years was at Wenonah Brewery located in Goodview, MN. I was scared to death actually but I promised myself that if it went well I would keep going but if it didn’t I would quit. Fortunately for me it went well and I’ve been playing ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Family life, military commitment in the beginning.
The hardest part as a solo performer is finding places to play that are willing to give you a chance.
I played a lot of open mics in the beginning hoping to make some connections.
Recording my songs has also been a struggle. It’s so expensive to do. I would love an opportunity to record at a larger studio but for now I’m just happy that some of my songs are published for my children and grandchildren.
I remarried in 2020 to my loving wife Cassandra. She has been super supportive and has been my biggest advocate on my musical journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to think of myself as a Jack of all trades.
I’ve been lucky enough in my life to experience many awesome jobs.
SSG in the Army National Guard
Building Contractor
HVAC Apprentice
Cable Technician
SCUBA Instructor
Winona County Dive Team Diver and Training Officer
For the past 16 years I’ve been an LPN for Hiawatha Homes Inc. in Rochester, MN
The last 8 years I’ve enjoyed living my childhood dream, singing songs and playing guitar for anyone who will listen.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being honest with myself. I like to play and write music that I enjoy. The songs I sing have meaning to me, whether mine or someone else’s. I feel the emotion of the songs when I play them.
