Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxine Yeboah.
Hi Maxine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started during quarantine when I was just 14 years old. Like many people, I had a lot of free time, so I began experimenting with my own hair. At first, it was just for fun—but as I got better, I realized I had a real passion and talent for it. I started practicing different styles on myself, watching tutorials, and learning through trial and error.
Eventually, word got around, and people began asking me to do their hair too. I turned a small corner of my dad’s basement into my first little salon space. It wasn’t fancy, but it was mine—and it was the beginning of something much bigger. Since then, I’ve grown my skills, built up a loyal client base, and continued to invest in myself and my business. What started as a quarantine hobby has turned into a true calling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. The road’s been anything but smooth, but every struggle shaped who I am today. Starting at 14, I was young, and that alone made people doubt me. No one really took me seriously at first—I had to work twice as hard to earn respect and show that I was serious about my craft.
I started doing hair in my dad’s basement, which created its own set of challenges. As my business started growing, space and privacy became an issue. My dad and I would sometimes argue about how how I was using his space.
I also had to deal with a lack of support. In the beginning, I didn’t really have people cheering me on or helping me promote my work. I was doing everything by myself—learning, marketing, booking clients, and handling the pressure alone. On top of that, not every client was easy to work with. I’ve dealt with last-minute cancellations, people undervaluing my work, and some clients who just weren’t respectful. It was draining.
But even through all of that, I never gave up. Every obstacle only made me more motivated to prove myself and to build something of my own, from the ground up.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hair By Maxine?
My business is more than just hair—it’s about helping people feel confident, seen, and celebrated. I specialize in protective styles like box braids, locs, cornrows, and lace front installs, with a focus on healthy hair care and making sure every client leaves my chair feeling their best. I work with all hair textures, but I especially love uplifting and caring for Black hair in all its beauty and versatility.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I build with every client. I don’t just style hair—I listen, I care, and I make sure every person feels comfortable and appreciated. I pay attention to detail, take my time, and treat every style like a work of art. I also make sure to use quality products and techniques that protect the hair, not just make it look good for a moment.
Brand-wise, I’m proud that everything I’ve built is rooted in authenticity. I started with nothing but passion and a vision. I didn’t wait for a perfect setup or outside validation—I created my own lane. I want readers to know that my brand is about real results, real love for the craft, and real respect for every person who sits in my chair.
Whether you’re coming for a fresh install, a quick braid-up, or just good vibes and self-care, I’ve got you.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is purpose, impact, and staying true to who I am. I care deeply about making people feel beautiful, valued, and confident in their natural selves. It’s not just about hair—it’s about representation, self-love, and creating a safe space for people to feel seen.
I also value growth—both personally and professionally. I started with nothing but drive, and I’ve learned that staying humble, focused, and passionate will always take you further than just talent alone. I want to inspire other young people, especially Black girls, to chase their dreams unapologetically—even when nobody else believes in them.
And above all, I value my relationship with God, my family, and the people who have supported me through it all. Those are the things that keep me grounded and remind me why I do what I do.
