Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Mbayu.
Hi LaToya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story, and that of SIME [C – MEH], is deeply intertwined with culinary traditions, where flavors tell stories and meals bring people together. Guided by a relentless spirit of innovation, I’ve sought to reimagine these traditions, blending time-honored techniques with fresh, bold ideas to create something uniquely vibrant. At the heart of it all lies personal passion—a love for food that transcends the kitchen, drawing from cherished memories, cultural heritage, and a desire to share joy through every dish. “SIME” is more than just a brand; it’s a celebration of flavor, creativity, and the connection we share over good food.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No journey worth taking is ever entirely smooth, and mine—with SIME—has had its fair share of challenges. There’s the emotional aspect of pouring passion into something and hoping it connects with others. Building SIME has been a labor of love, and while there were times of doubt or setbacks, each obstacle became an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine not just the product, but the vision behind it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At its core, my work centers on creating and sharing something that connects people through flavor, culture, and creativity. With SIME, I specialize in crafting bold Cameroonian pepper sauces in different heat levels (Mild, Medium, Hot), that honor rich traditions while embracing modern innovation. I’m known for celebrating heritage through food and for infusing soulful, global influences into every creation, making each dish an unforgettable journey of taste.
What sets me apart is my ability to balance multiple facets of my identity and expertise. Alongside my culinary passion, I’m a professional doctoral graduate, with a deep commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning. I also work full-time in corporate America, where I navigate professional challenges while honing valuable skills that influence my entrepreneurial journey.
What I’m most proud of is how SIME has become more than just a culinary endeavor—it’s a reflection of my diverse experiences and passions. It represents resilience, the ability to innovate, and the drive to create something meaningful, even while juggling the demands of a thriving career. This fusion of authenticity, innovation, and adaptability makes SIME not just a brand, but a testament to the limitless possibilities of pursuing my dreams.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Define your “why” and stay authentic to your values—your unique perspective will set you apart. Know that you are in competition with yourself and no one else. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and don’t fear mistakes. Start small while dreaming big and build meaningful relationships that inspire and support you. Most importantly, trust the process and enjoy the journey!
