Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Safarova
Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2010, I moved to the United States. In my homeland in Azerbaijan, I worked at a state research institute as a chief researcher. Having moved away from work, from scientific achievements, I realized that I needed to open another page of life, and I began to realize my dream – to paint. It was as if an invisible hand was leading me to my dream. Looking through the paintings of artists on social networks, I accidentally came across short master classes by the artist Bob Ross. His beautiful paintings, his unique skills inspired me. I learned how to work with oil paints, what brushes to use and a lot of other techniques and gained knowledge as for the beginning. I can say that Bob Ross was my teacher. I began to paint with oil, decorated my walls with my art work, gave away most of the art pieces to my family, friends and acquaintances.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I cannot say that this path was difficult, because each picture brought me satisfaction, joy. I looked at my creation with love and admiration. I often would look at my work and think “oh my god, I really did it!”
It was very interesting how I was able to change my life and make my childhood dream come true – to paint. Probably, many years of research work gave me the habit of slowly and patiently moving towards my goal.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For several years now, I have been very attracted to interior painting. In these works, I use acrylic paints, texture paste, point to point technique, mirrors, epoxy resin. Last summer I was in my hometown of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. While being with my relatives I started observing and remembering my family member, my ancestors, the roots of our large family and in that moment I suddenly visualized new art picture – how the strong hand of ancestors firmly holds the tree of life. The branches on the tree are us and the new generation. I made a sketch and asked my relatives to give this picture a name. There were many options – Hand of ancestors, Strength of the family, Roots of generations, Memory of the family, Origins … Having returned home, I painted this picture, and this picture is my pride. I want to call it “Hand of Ancestors”. Maybe the readers of your magazine will suggest something else. I will be happy to consider all the options. We are all different from others and that what makes are life so beautiful and diverse.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In my case, my strong character and responsibility help me. I never stop halfway I finish what I started. I try to make my paintings individual, I do not repeat the works of other artists. The themes may be the same, but all the works have my personal style, my preferences, my vision.
The size and complexity of the painting determines the price. I present you with several paintings.
