Building a Business from the Ground Up: My Journey in the Cleaning Industry
In 1995, I took a leap of faith and started my own residential and commercial cleaning business. At the time, I recognized a growing demand for professional cleaning services as more households became dual income, leaving families with less time for household upkeep. With just a $20 investment, I set out to test the waters—an affordable way to explore the market with minimal risk.
What I quickly discovered was not just a business opportunity but a deeply rewarding career. My services provided much-needed support to busy families, while also allowing me to maintain a flexible schedule and be present for my own family. The balance of entrepreneurship and personal life was invaluable, and I knew this was a path worth pursuing.
As my business grew, so did the demand, and I soon realized that scaling was necessary to keep up. To equip myself with the right knowledge and resources, I enrolled at the St. Thomas College of Entrepreneurship. There, I had the incredible opportunity to be mentored by a successful woman business owner, who guided me through the essential aspects of marketing, business strategy, and scaling operations. Her insights and mentorship were transformative, shaping the way I approached my business and laying the foundation for the long-term success I continue to enjoy today.
Looking back, that small initial investment was just the beginning of an incredible journey—one that has not only allowed me to build a thriving business but also to support and inspire others along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Success is never a smooth road, and building a business comes with its fair share of challenges. As Lori Greiner from Shark Tank says, “The dream is real, but the hustle is sold separately.” Every setback has reinforced my belief in resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving—the true traits of an entrepreneur.
One of my biggest hurdles was scaling my business and managing staff. I had to create a strong work culture where my team understood their value and the impact of our services. Another challenge was navigating tax liabilities, which taught me the importance of having an accountant well-versed in industry regulations to ensure compliance and financial stability.
Economic shifts also tested my business. After 9/11, consumer uncertainty forced strategic pivots, and COVID-19 reshaped how we provided services. Adapting to new safety protocols while clients remained home was a challenge, but it ultimately strengthened our operations.
Every obstacle has been a lesson in growth. The ability to adjust, innovate, and push forward has been key to sustaining and evolving my business over the years.
