Hidden Gems: Meet Elijah Bell of Symytry Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Bell.

Hi Elijah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a very creative family. Because of this, I was always involved in some sort of creative outlet. It really begain with my love for music and the connection I had/ have with it.

I found Yoga around 6 years ago, at a very pivotal moment in my life.

During that time, I was adjusting to some major life changes; having just relocated here from California and confronting all the challenges that came along with 2020.

I found myself looking for something to ground my focus and bring peace.

Yoga has given me that and more!

Health and exercise have always been very important to me. I participated in sports from a very young age, well into high school and later incorporated weight-training into my adult life.

Yoga was introduced to me, by accident, in a way:

I stumbled upon a class in the multi purpose-room at my local gym and ever since that day, I was hooked. I immediately joined a Yoga studio and began practicing – consistently!

It satisfied so many aspects of what my body craved, naturally:

The use of movement and muscle engagement allowed me to feel present in my own body and the act of breathing to remain focused, provided a mindful meditation.

Yoga connects a lot of the things I enjoy in life. I get a sense of community, connection to the people around me and the ones that attend my classes, and the flow of the music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Other than adjusting to my move across the country, things have gone pretty smooth for me.
Yoga has been a saving grace. Within the move and finding yoga, I realized I not only wanted to teach yoga, but I wanted to find the best way to make it accessible to people who may have not had the chance previously.
Yoga can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I want to make it palatable to people, so they can show up for themselves in class: emotionally and physically.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently run my practice, Symytry Yoga, at Odigo Wellness in Uptown Minneapolis. I offer two classes a week: A slow flow Vinyasa on Wednesday evenings and a Power Vinyasa on Friday evenings.
What’s more important than what sets me apart, is what I hope to bring to the yoga community. I want to make it more accessible for people. All levels are welcome. Everyone has the invitation in my classes to challenge themselves or take it as easy as they need. I aim to give people the opportunity to be alone with themselves in the presence of others.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I come from a large, artistic family and was always very close with my siblings. I was a very rambunctious and energetic kid. My mother said I was a bull in a china shop. I was always athletic and involved in sports growing up and found drumming as an outlet for some of that energy. My siblings and I were in bands together and worked at various venues out in California together, so music has always been an incredibly large part of my life. After moving to Minnesota and discovering yoga, I found it perfect for me. Yoga became a great way for me to harness my anxious energy and force myself to calm and center myself. Yoga is interesting to me because even though it’s calm it requires a ton of energy to focus that energy; the key is to make it look calm.
