Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Rieken.
Hi Jill, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in dance began in the basement of my childhood home, where I spent countless hours dancing in my mom’s studio. Watching her teach and inspire others ignited a spark in me. I knew early on that I wanted to follow in her footsteps and create a space where dance could be more than just movement—a place where it could build character, confidence, and community.
This passion continued into my college years. At that time I was fortunate to be offered a position with the Minnesota Jazz Dance Company under the direction of Zoe Sealy. Dancing with MJDC was an incredible experience that deepened my love for dance and gave me firsthand insight into the artistry and discipline of professional dance.
In 1979, with a heart full of dreams and a small community room at Eden Prairie Center, I opened “Jill Sinn’s Eden Prairie Dance Arts Centre,” teaching just 40 students in our first year. It was an incredible experience—personal, rewarding, and fueled entirely by word of mouth. We grew one dancer, one family at a time.
Over the years, Dance Arts Centre has grown beyond my wildest dreams. Today, we are home to hundreds of dancers and a dedicated team of 31 staff members who share our vision. I believe that what truly sets us apart is our commitment to leading with character. We strive to create an environment where every dancer feels seen, valued, and inspired to be their best self.
Reflecting on the past 45 years, I’m filled with gratitude for the relationships we’ve built. Generations of dancers have passed through our doors, some returning as teachers, others bringing their own children to experience the magic. It’s a testament to the community we’ve nurtured and the impact we’ve made together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life’s journey is rarely without its bumps, and mine has been no exception. Each challenge I’ve faced has been an opportunity for growth, shaping both me and Dance Arts Centre into what we are today. Our mindset truly matters—it influences how we perceive and respond to the hurdles before us.
One of the most significant challenges in recent memory was the onset of the COVID. Like many, I was engulfed by fear and uncertainty as the future of our cherished studio. The restrictions and unpredictability threatened the very foundation we had built with passion and dedication. There was a pivotal moment when the weight of these challenges felt overwhelming. I made a conscious decision to embrace a positive mindset. I reminded myself, “I can and I will make this work.” This shift in perspective was crucial.
With renewed determination, I rallied our incredible team. Together, we moved forward on a journey of resilience and innovation. We explored new avenues, adapted our teaching methods, and found creative solutions to keep the spirit of dance alive within our community.
These challenges became catalysts for growth and reinvention. We transformed setbacks into stepping stones, and the collective positivity of our team became our driving force. Not only did we weather the storm, but we emerged stronger, more adaptable, and more united than ever before.
We’ve been impressed with Dance Arts Centre, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Dance Arts Centre, we believe that joy is at the heart of every meaningful learning experience. We strive to create an environment where dancers not only develop their skills but also have a great time in the process. When students have fun, they become more engaged, motivated, and open to embracing new challenges. This positive atmosphere fosters creativity and encourages dancers to take risks, leading to greater personal growth and a deeper love for dance.
We offer a comprehensive range of classes for dancers of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to pre-professional students. Our programs include ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, and more. Additionally, we have a competitive team program consisting of 12 performing teams, ranging from pre-K through high school, designed for dancers seeking to build strong technique, learn team camaraderie, and improve performance skills.
Our “Character First” philosophy is integral to all aspects of our program. We emphasize values such as respect, responsibility, and perseverance, encouraging dancers to embody these traits both in and out of the studio. Through community service projects, mentorship opportunities, and recognition programs, we instill a sense of integrity and leadership in our students.
In essence, Dance Arts Centre is more than a place to learn dance; it’s a community where students grow as individuals. We are committed to nurturing each dancer’s love for the art, building their confidence, and equipping them with the tools to face new challenges with grace and determination.
