Hi Sammi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Accidental Evolution: How I Built Bright Idea Properties
My journey into property management and owning my own brokerage was anything but conventional—it was an accidental evolution. Nearly two decades ago, I started working for a landlord in Winona, MN, while attending college. At the time, I was just earning general credits at the local tech school, with no idea that real estate would become my career.

Back then, I was right alongside the maintenance crew, doing everything from demo tear-outs and lawn care to cleaning and painting—so much painting that it would make your head spin! After graduating, I continued my education at Kaplan University when online learning was just becoming popular. I pursued a B.S. in Legal Studies (pre-law), but about nine months before I was set to graduate, I received an unexpected call from the school. They told me I had been in school too long without obtaining a degree, so they were cutting off my financial aid—not because of how much I had borrowed, but simply due to the time I had spent in school.
That was my “there I was” moment. What does “almost a degree” get you? Well… it gets you “almost a job.”

The Pivot to Real Estate
My top four classes in Legal Studies were Constitutional Law, Landlord-Tenant Law, Real Estate Law, and Contract Law. With that foundation, real estate seemed like a natural pivot. I spent about three years selling homes at a small brokerage, learning valuable processes that I still use today. The team was incredible, and I admired their approach. But when I suggested adding rentals to the MLS and expanding into property management, they weren’t interested.

To supplement my income, I moved to a brokerage managing about 1,400 rental units, where I could also sell homes on the side. That experience taught me a lot about leasing and property management, but ultimately, their values didn’t align with mine, so I looked for another path.

I then joined a real estate team that incorporated property management. During my time there, I brought on 28 rental units of my own and deepened my understanding of leasing and management processes. Eventually, I realized I could earn my broker’s license and build something of my own—so I did.

Bright Idea Properties: From 28 to 170 Units
I started this company from the front bedroom of my two manufactured/mobile home in Lake Elmo!
On January 27, 2022, I officially launched Bright Idea Properties with those original 28 units. Today, we’ve grown to around 170 units, with a dedicated team that includes:

Two full-time, in-house maintenance professionals
Two full-time virtual assistants
A licensed real estate agent (besides me!)

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From Rock Bottom to Resilience: The Struggle That Almost Ended It All
Ah… no! One of the most memorable struggles of my career happened when I branched off on my own. At that point, I had about 50 doors under management—but I wasn’t making any money. In fact, with each passing month, I was sinking deeper into debt.

My $20,000 line of credit? Maxed out.
Both of my credit cards? Also maxed out.
I had no idea how I was going to pay rent or even afford food.

I remember sitting in my living room, crying on the couch to my partner, convinced that this was it. I was ready to shut down the business and walk away.

Then… the door opened.

One of my larger clients walked in. They owned about 25 properties—40 units in total. Their business gave me just enough traction to keep going. I wasn’t out of the woods financially, but it provided a foundation—a reason to keep pushing forward.

Fighting for Every Step
I should also mention—I didn’t come from wealth or privilege. I grew up on an organic farm with very little, and I’ve had to fight and claw my way to where I am today. I built this business with grit, determination, and sheer willpower. I didn’t have much family support along the way, but there’s one exception—my sister, DJ, who now works with me.

This journey hasn’t been easy, but every struggle, every hard moment, has shaped me into the business owner I am today. Resilience, perseverance, and a little bit of luck have been the key ingredients in getting here—and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
