Life & Work with Nikki Watermolen of Prior Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Watermolen.

Hi Nikki, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
You know the saying, “always the bridesmaid, never the bride”? Well, I was always the personal attendant. The handy gal to have around that was good with all the details and could sew you into your dress! That’s me! Over the years, that role of Personal Attendant took on more and more. Slowly but surely, I stopped being with the bride on her wedding day and started being in front of the vendors and making sure all those intricate details were coming together while all those beautiful photos were being taken before the “I do’s”. This went on for several years, helping my friends and my family members get married from behind the scenes. Then that one wedding came along, the one where it all clicked. I was wearing a red dress and people kept asking if I was the ‘Lady in Red’ whenever they had questions about the structure of the day. I got asked by a few of the vendors for my business card. When I told them this wasn’t my job but just a thing I did for friends and family they all assured me that I really should be doing it for real. It took a few years to build up the courage to quit the full time job and start my business but I am so glad I did! Since then, I have been able to be a part of so many incredible weddings! It really is so fun to help brides and grooms make their day come to fruition. In the last year, I decided to add to my business repertoire and got my cottage license. With that, I make and sell simple syrups naturally infused with real ingredients. It is so fun to take part in art fairs and makers markets, visiting with customers and sharing something I love making.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ooof! No. Starting a business (or businesses) is no joke! I have certain areas where I am very gifted and others not so much. Trying to do it all myself has definitely created some hurdles to jump through. Marketing and advertising, getting my name out there… those are hard things to do. Thankfully, I have been blessed with amazing clients that share about the work I have done for them to get my name out there.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of my two businesses is making and selling infused simple syrups. These are great to use for coffee or tea, cocktails or mocktails, really any beverage! I love the craft of inventing new flavor profiles and seeing peoples faces light up when they try a sample.

As a wedding coordinator, I work with my couples, learning all about their day. I become the host of sorts on the wedding day so that the bride, groom and all of their friends and family can be guests on their wedding day. I become the person with the answers so that the only people talking to the bride and groom are their guests and the most difficult decision they need to make that day is which dessert to eat first!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Honestly I’m not too sure on this. Anything in particular this would be about?
