Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Spilde.
Hi Alicia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in rural Minnesota laid the foundation for a journey that eventually led to attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where a
bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education was earned in 2007. Although a teaching career initially seemed promising, the path shifted towards a role at a local telephone company and later the Marshall County Highway Department. Little did I know, my journey was just getting started!
A significant turning point occurred when the decision was made to expand my husband’s home remodeling and construction business. Construction commenced on a new building on Main Street in Karlstad in September 2023, marking the first new development on this street in over 20 years. The grand opening of the home design and supply center took place on June 3, 2024, leading to a transition from the role at Marshall County to full-time manager of both the construction business and the home design center.
Over the past year, extensive learning has taken place through various classes aimed at mastering material estimation, tours of window and cabinet factories, and participation in networking events to connect with vendors and fellow lumber yard and design center owners. The importance of cultivating professional relationships within the industry has become increasingly clear, making this exciting venture feel like a true calling.
This journey would not have been possible without the invaluable support and expertise of Hayley Coffield, the designer and drafter at Sand Ridge Home Supply + Design. Since joining in January 2021, Hayley’s keen eye for design and collaborative spirit have significantly enriched the work environment. Together with Hayley, numerous objectives have been accomplished, all while creating a fun and engaging atmosphere. Hayley’s positive energy and passion for design bring a sense of adventure to each day at Sand Ridge.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. I have had to learn a new industry in a very short amount of time. The learning curve is extremely steep. Over the past year, I have become increasingly confident in the service I can provide, and I believe our customers can sense this confidence.
We’ve been impressed with Sand Ridge Home Supply + Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sand Ridge Home Supply + Design is a place where home and business owners can come to make selections for any aspect of their construction or remodel project. We offer a wide range of products, including cabinets, countertops, flooring, siding, shingles, and windows. We are a one-stop shop for building projects. We have a beautiful home center filled with samples. We are in a comfortable environment that is different from lumber yards. Our customers are greeted with a friendly face, and we go the extra mile to ensure quick turnaround times on estimates. We value honesty and integrity, and we will always do the right thing by our customers.
Our impressive showroom sets us apart. We love to see the looks of surprise when someone steps in the door for the first time. We are often told by our visitors, “We can’t believe this is in Karlstad.” Our customers feel like they’re getting the big-city choice right in their hometown. We are so thrilled to offer that opportunity to our local communities.
What’s next?
We are looking forward to expanding. As we have grown significantly this first year, it is clear that we need more storage. Expansion plans are in the works.
