Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Alden Howard.
Hi Robin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t exactly plan to become an author. It was more of a survival instinct than a career path. I’ve always been a writer at heart, but I didn’t truly find my voice until life knocked the wind out of me. I was juggling chronic illness, loss, trauma, and the quiet kind of grief that doesn’t always make noise, just echoes.
I’ve always journaled and somewhere in that darkness, I started writing stories that didn’t flinch. Stories about resilience, about people who’ve been through hell and came out with something worth fighting for. What began as therapy turned into a four-book series (Four Husbands and a Bottle of Trouble), a loyal reader base, and a purpose that stuck.
Now I spend my time writing, managing a small business, and publishing the kind of books I once needed to read but couldn’t find—emotionally raw thrillers with grit, grief, and an undercurrent of hope.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not. But I’m not sure I’d trust a smooth road anyway. It probably leads somewhere boring.
Being an independent author is a constant challenge. There’s no publisher backing you, no team handling marketing or edits or logistics. You are the team. It’s overwhelming at times but I always push forward.
In exchange I get total creative freedom. I get to keep my voice. Raw, gritty and unfiltered. I get to connect directly with readers who tell me my words made them feel seen. That makes every pothole and detour worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write genre-bending psychological thrillers rooted in lived trauma, Appalachian grit, military realism, mafia undertones, and a dose of bourbon-soaked heart. My series, Four Husbands and a Bottle of Trouble, follows a woman who doesn’t just survive—she dismantles the systems that tried to own her. It’s not your typical thriller. It’s layered. It’s emotionally raw. It punches you in the throat and then hands you a tissue.
What I’m most proud of? That my stories have helped people. Readers reach out to say, “You put words to what I couldn’t explain,” or “I finally felt understood.” That’s bigger than any accolade.
What sets me apart? I don’t romanticize abuse. I write it like someone who’s survived it—because I have. My work blends beautiful prose with brutal truth. Add in humor, resilience, and characters who claw their way through hell—and you’ve got something that sticks. What sets me apart? I don’t romanticize abuse. I write it like someone who’s survived it—because I have. But it’s not about “poor me,” and it’s not about bashing men. It’s about showing what it takes to rise, to reclaim power, to stitch yourself back together with grit and grace. My work blends beautiful prose with brutal truth—raw, haunting, and sometimes darkly funny. Add in characters who claw their way through hell and still find a way to hope, and you’ve got something that sticks. Something that lingers.
I don’t follow genre rules. I follow what’s true. That’s what makes it powerful.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I didn’t have a wise mentor guiding me through my first draft—I just began. That first book was rough, but each one since has taught me more about the craft. I dove into research, explored different tools, and leaned on social media to connect with other writers and readers. The biggest key for me has been staying curious and willing to learn. You don’t always need a mentor if you’re open to figuring it out as you go.
