Rising Stars: Meet Lindy Wilson of Minnetonka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindy Wilson.

Hi Lindy, thanks for joining us. We’d love to hear how you started out and where you are today.
I am a storyteller. It all started with an in-flight magazine and a mother’s intuition. I had just completed my college degree in Communications–Film Studies and was working as an assistant commercial editor, unsure of my next step. Then my mom, reading through a Northwest Airlines magazine, stumbled on an article about Robert Redford and the Sundance Institute. She sent it to me and said, “You should apply to this.” I listened, and twice a year, I sent in my application to the Sundance Institute Feature Film Workshop. My persistence paid off when Sundance invited me to join their month-long workshop as a replacement editor. That moment changed everything. I quit my job and seized this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. That decision sparked a 15-year journey with Sundance, editing at their Feature Film Workshops, Composers Workshops, and Choreographers/Dance Workshops, as well as working at Sundance Film Festivals in Park City. What an incredible time it was up in the mountains near Provo, Utah, surrounded by talented directors, writers, actors, production crews, and seasoned Hollywood mentors. The experience fueled my passion for storytelling and helped hone my craft, laying the foundation for a deeply fulfilling editing career. Over the years, I made many lasting friendships at Sundance, connections I continue to cherish and maintain to this day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started as an editor at Wilson Griak in Minneapolis, there weren’t many female editors. I was a bit of a trailblazer. Today, women make up about 24% of editors (per 2025 Zippa reports). As an editor, I face challenges all editors face like tight deadlines that demand quick turnarounds, mastering ever-evolving editing software, managing client expectations, and, like the rest of the working world, balancing work life and personal life. The supportive post-production community, the lasting friendships I’ve made along the way, encouragement from agency creatives, and my passion for meaningful edits all empower me to thrive despite the hurdles.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work? What Do You Do?

As an editor, consultant, and voice-over talent, I study human emotions and how to reveal them through editing. As an example, a powerful moment in a cut captures the moment a character makes a choice, whether to help, to act out of love, or to wrestle with selfishness. Picture, color, framing, pacing, sound, and editing aren’t just tools, they’re the language of emotion, shaping each moment with precision and power. Complex characters in a simple story make the strongest films.

In my office, I have a framed quote that reads “God gives everyone a gift, but it’s up to us to discover what that gift is, how to use it and how to make it grow.” It inspires me every day to explore my creative boundaries. I’ve had fleeting dreams of being a talk show host, travel writer, airline pilot, travel planner (definitely a travel theme here), or even a realtor. In fact, I followed through on that last one. I earned my real estate license and have been thriving in the business with my incredible business partner for over a decade, alongside my editing career.

I fell in love with editing for its creative power and never looked back. From dialogue-driven films to fast-paced social campaigns, I thrive on variety. I draw from a wide range of editing techniques, like parallel editing (cutting between simultaneous scenes) or in medias res (diving straight into the action)—to craft impactful stories. I use AI tools for VFX, enhancements, and color grading—blending innovation with narrative craft. There’s nothing like creating social media content, blending graphics, effects, color, and music to engage the right audience energizes me every time. My brand tagline is “Telling Your Stories with Impact” for a reason. Whether I’m cutting commercials that persuade with conviction, or a documentary that provokes questions, my goal is simple: make the audience feel something.

 What do you specialize in

Specializing in dialogue editing and emotionally driven storytelling, this editor crafts authentic, impactful narratives across a wide range of genres. I like working with my team editing commercials for major brands including Regis, General Mills, 3M, The American Coalition for Ethanol, Allianz, Target, Caribou, and Harley-Davidson, with experience in drama, comedy, lifestyle, slice-of-life, humor, testimonial, emotional, seasonal, and demo formats. Years of involvement with feature film workshops and narrative films have sharpened a keen ability to shape compelling dialogue, earning a strong reputation as a dialogue expert.

What are you known for

I’m recognized for my positivity, emotional storytelling, a mix of experience and fresh creative energy. Clients value my problem-solving, communication, and adaptability, whether voicing national campaigns or editing in languages I don’t speak by relying on cadence and body language. My work with international teams at Moonstone, the Irish equivalent of Sundance’s Feature Film Workshops, in Ireland and Scotland, has sharpened my ability to connect stories across cultures.

What Are You Most Proud Of?

When asked what I’m most proud of, my heart goes straight to my family. I’ve been blessed with incredible kids and a supportive husband—we’ve built a strong foundation of love that grounds everything I do. I’m proud of the meaningful connections I’ve built through teaching and mentoring, including a lasting creative collaboration with an MFA Visual Studies student from China. Teaching editing at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for four years gave me the chance to share my passion for emotionally driven storytelling while learning from my students’ fresh perspectives. While relationships bring the deepest satisfaction, I also take pride in the recognition my work has received. I’ve been lucky to collaborate with amazing creatives on award-winning projects—earning honors like a Cannes Silver Lion, Emmy, Clio, Berlin Film Festival award, Gold Telly, AICE, and even having a commercial included in MoMA’s permanent collection. My openness to risk and failure is a strength, so I lean into it. I embrace new tools, including AI, to evolve my craft—always with a focus on the human emotion that drives every great story.

What Sets You Apart?

What sets me apart is my diverse media experience, mentoring and consulting background and a passion for capturing human emotion through editing. Every frame should serve the story. I approach each project with the curiosity of a newcomer and the wisdom of a veteran.

What makes you happy?

Editing makes me happy, but my greatest joy flows from my faith, family, and friends. My family inspires me to live life to the fullest, pushing me to embrace new experiences and discover strengths I never knew I had. Our children have fueled my creative toolbox for years and filled my life with love.  Adventurous travels with our three adult kids and son-in-law spark my curiosity, leading me to try bold hobbies like soaring through flying lessons, hiking breathtaking trails,  trying culinary creations, and finding peace in playing the piano. I was raised by wonderful parents whose love and wisdom shaped my world. My husband and I now enjoy the experience as joyful grandparents to our adorable grandson. And if you want a boost of support, improve your well-being, and an extra dose of happiness, spend time with your friends.

These experiences, infused with belief in a higher purpose, sharpen my creativity and make editing a reflection of the experiences and relationships I find in the world around me.

“Telling Your Stories with Impact” isn’t just a tagline, it’s what I do. If your next project needs that kind of care and creativity, let’s make it happen.
