Community Highlights: Meet Jackie Miller of Miller’s Corner Bar & Grill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Miller.

Hi Jackie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In the fall of 2010 I was asked to reopen and manage a restaurant, I had zero experience in this industry. A year and a half later, the owner defaulted on his contract for deed, I was offered the opportunity to buy the building. At this point I really had no other choice because I was in debt over my head!
So in the spring of 2012, I changed the name to Miller’s and that’s how our story began.
The first 6 to 7 years was filled with repairing pretty much everything in this 100 year-old building…equipment included. Thankfully, our loyal customers stuck by us and continued to support us especially through the tough times!
We are small, we know pretty much everyone who comes through the door and if we don’t, we will by the time they leave.
My staff is amazing, period. There is eight of us. We are not only coworkers, but friends too. Most have been here for since day one, 12 years or more.
Customers not only love our burgers, but also having a place they feel welcomed. Many friendships have been forged in our little bar, I think that’s one of the things that hits home for me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road!
You can never let your guard down and think that it’s going to be smooth sailing because as soon as you do, you need a new freezer, fryer, cooler etc.!
Also, starting out with zero experience is not for the faint of heart. Many lessons were learned the hard way. There were many days where I wasn’t even sure if I had enough money to open. Somehow we always seemed to figure it out, learn and move on.

We’ve been impressed with Miller’s Corner Bar & Grill, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small dive bar known for our burgers.
Our burgers are fresh, never frozen. We hand patty them every day, throughout the day. Our grill is a SMALL flattop that is well seasoned. It’s been there for many years.
Our “kitchen” is directly behind the bar. People enjoy watching the action on the flattop and can see the attention and care that goes into every order.
Putting out good food consistently takes work, I am fortunate to have cooks that care about that as much as I do.
We have live music on the weekends. The stage is pretty small, which makes for a more intimate atmosphere.
The local musicians love having a little place to play and we love having them!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Oh boy..yes I do.
Hire a bookkeeper, CPA, payroll company and know what you are responsible for with the state…taxes and licensing.
Be aware of scammers trying to charge you for things that are free, like renewing with the Secretary of State for example.
Take good care of your staff, customers truly enjoy a familiar face.
