Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonelle Salzman.
Hi Jonelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My first experience in the beauty industry was a job I had working in research and development for an organic health and beauty company. I loved the intersection of science and beauty that came with that job, and that is what first sparked my interest in the beauty and esthetics industry.
I always knew I wanted to work for myself, so eventually I went on to open my first business; a laser tattoo removal clinic in the Medical Arts building downtown. In 2016 I began to get a lot of calls from women who were wanting to remove their old permanent makeup so that they could redo their brows with microblading (which was newly emerging onto the beauty market). I looked into what microblading was, and knew immediately it was something I was interested in learning more about and potentially doing myself. It was an awesome mix of creativity, science, and esthetics. I took my first microblading class at the end of 2106, and went on to open what is now The Archery Collective at the end of 2017. I specialize in permanent brows with a focus on nano brows and powder brows.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a business owner definitely has its challenges. I think most small business owners can attest to the fact that at some point we have had to independently fill all of the roles it takes to run things, especially when first starting out. In my case that was being the brow artist, marketing manager, tech support, accountant, janitorial service, receptionist, etc.
So much of it is just figuring things out and learning as you go. I would like to say it gets easier with time and experience, but I think you really just learn how to navigate the challenges better. Just when you think you are coasting along and you have it all dialed in, something catches you by surprise (Covid for example). If you are growing and scaling at any time there are always going to be new things to learn and figure out.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I founded The Archery Collective in 2017 with the fundamental goal of providing clients the best permanent makeup services by the most skilled team of artists. The Archery Collective has since grown to offer a broader range of esthetic services, and we are now proud to bring you the Twin Cities’ top talent in permanent makeup, tattooing, and esthetics services. We are currently home to 9 permanent makeup artists, 2 tattoo artists, and 2 estheticians. Our focus on continuing education sets us apart – our service providers are consistently advancing their skills, assuring we are always bringing you the best the industry has to offer. Our permanent brow artists were the first to bring nano brows to the area, and our estheticians are always testing new skincare lines and techniques for our guests.
As a membership based studio, The Archery Collective also offers our service providers an environment that promotes career flexibility, professional support, and nurtures professional growth in a way not found in either employer or salon suite rental working environments.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I am a big proponent for continuing education. There is always something to learn, especially in the beauty industry. The technology and products available to service providers in the beauty industry continue to advance rapidly, and it’s so important to make sure we are advancing with it so our guests get the best of the best.
I also really really believe in betting on yourself and taking career risks. So many of the members at our Collective have really cool backgrounds and stories on how they got into the beauty/tattoo/esthetics field, often involving them taking a leap of faith in themselves in starting their own small businesses. My grandma always used to tell me, “nothing ventured, nothing gained,” and that mindset has really helped propel me.
