Today we’d like to introduce you to Micki Schaffer.
Hi Micki, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like many others, during the pandemic, things felt bland. During this time I began to notice how I was missing something but I wasn’t sure what was it was. I had just started a new job, which I thought checked all of the boxes. But shortly after, it didn’t feel right. I couldn’t believe that I had made such a monumental mistake. This prompted me to begin working with a professional coach. One of the first things we explored were my values. Sure, I had made a list of the things I wanted, but I never stopped to think of the things I truly valued, in and outside of work. Not just the checklist of things like salary, title, and type of work. But where did I find meaning, purpose, and joy. The deeper I reflected, the more I began to pay attention to the things that lit me up. When I asked myself “what do I want”, I responded with “more joy”. This began my journey to joy and ultimately creating MŌR JOY, LLC. where I empower women to create lives rich in meaning, fulfillment, and joy – at work and beyond.
After almost 35 years working for companies who help individuals and businesses get healthier, I took the leap and started my own coaching and consulting business focused on helping others find more joy in life and work, which I have been doing for the past three years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the things I’ve struggled with is staying true to me without being influenced by outside forces. From social media, to peer or family pressures, and societal norms, there are so many ways to get distracted. Knowing what drives me and focusing on my values and strengths keeps me grounded and energized.
To help keep me on track, I rely on these foundational coaching principles to keep me moving in the right direction.
1) Define your goal – What do you want to focus on?
2) Determine your options – What are all of the ways you can achieve your goal?
3) Be ready for obstacles – What could derail you and what will you do if that gets in your way?
4) Take action – What one thing are you going to do now to move closer towards your goal?
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Demands on women are higher than ever, leaving little time to focus on health and wellbeing. And when women neglect themselves, it impacts their ability to care for others. Prioritizing self care is making a priceless investment that ensures we can continue to thrive, while maintaining balance and fulfillment.
MŌR JOY empowers women to create lives rich in meaning, fulfillment, and joy, at work and beyond, with professional coaching based on positive psychology principles. It supports a new vision of womanhood – where thriving feels natural, and fulfillment comes without the burnout.
MŌR JOY coaching works with you to help you become a better person, perform better, and achieve your goals. Coaching is time dedicated to you. It’s taking the time to understand yourself with someone who is non-judgmental and who will listen and provide encouragement. Coaching isn’t just about solving problems but unlocking the next level.
Coaching is not therapy. Coaching does not treat mental health conditions and does not deal with past trauma. Coaching is forward thinking and action-oriented.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space for women who are striving to do it all – a space where they can get support as they transition to a life filled with ease, energy, and joy, in a way that feels fun, supportive, and simple.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I always loved playing outside and exploring nature. Every night, we’d play games outside until it got dark. My favorite summer camp was science camp. Each day we’d explore a different park, learn about the animals and insects, and look at leaves, bark, and water under a microscope. I think when you explore and are curious, it opens you up to learning new things and meeting new people.
Personality wise, I was sensitive to emotions. I was always taught to let my feelings out instead of keeping them in. That resulted in lots of laughs, but also in a few tears. As part of my coach training, I’ve studied research on emotions. I find it interesting that you can simultaneously experience more than one emotion at once (ie: mixed emotions), and that a core emotion like joy if intensified can be felt as ecstasy, and a milder version of joy would be felt as serenity.
