Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellee Bogatzki.
Hi Ellee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been surrounded by the hum of hair dryers, the scent of hairspray, and the joyful chatter of women gathered in my mom’s home salon. She’s been doing hair my whole life and growing up beside her. Watching the way she made people feel seen, beautiful, and cared for. It left a lasting mark on my heart. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those little moments planted a seed in me.
As I got older, I knew I wanted to do something that made people feel good about themselves. I wanted to be a light in people’s lives, just like my mom was. When I found out I was pregnant with my first son, I made the decision to go to esthetician school and specialize in lashes. I wanted to finish before he arrived so I could be present for him and still have something for myself. Something I loved.
I spent the next three years building a career doing lashes, forming the sweetest connections, and helping women feel confident and beautiful. But I kept feeling a gentle pull toward something more. So, with a full heart and a growing little family, I went back to school to complete the full cosmetology program and finally follow in my mom’s footsteps.
Now, six years into this journey, I still wake up grateful that I get to do what I love, connecting with people, lifting them up in every way that I can, and helping them see the beauty that’s already inside them. This isn’t just a career to me; it’s my passion, my purpose, and my way of sharing a little extra love with the world. And the best part? I have so many years left.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been full of twists, challenges, and some really tough lessons but each one has shaped who I am today, and I wouldn’t trade that growth for anything.
When I first set my heart on cosmetology school, I found out I was pregnant with my first son. That moment changed everything. I wanted to be able to finish school before he arrived, so I pivoted and went through the esthetician program instead. It wasn’t the original plan, but it was the right one for that season of life.
School was never easy for me to begin with, and to make things harder, the first school I attended (a private program in Minnesota) was incredibly difficult emotionally. Everyone was treated poorly, and it was a very toxic environment that made it hard to stay motivated. I’ve always had a strong voice, so staying quiet in that kind of setting was never an option for me. Eventually, I made the decision to leave and transfer to a different state school in Minnesota. It was the best decision I could’ve made. That new environment gave me the space to truly learn and grow.
Even after graduating, there were still challenges like figuring out what products I loved, how to build a business, and how to create a brand and experience that felt true to me. When you’re starting out, you often have no idea what you’re doing but you show up every day anyway. You work hard. You learn as you go. And you trust that the passion and effort you’re putting in will lead to something beautiful on the other side.
So no, it hasn’t been easy, but every challenge taught me something, and each one helped me become a better stylist, a better businesswoman, and a better version of myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in a cozy, family-owned salon in downtown Alexandria, Minnesota, alongside my mom. It’s such a special place, full of love, laughter, and the kind of comfort that feels like home. I specialize in eyelash extensions, healthy hair growth, and hair care. My passion lies in helping people feel more confident and cared for from the inside out.
Many people know me for my lash work, which I’ve been doing for six years. I love how something so small can make such a big difference in how someone feels. More recently, I’ve poured my heart into learning about scalp health and hair growth. That passion led me to create and publish a scalp health guide, which is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s more than just a guide; it’s a way for me to walk with people through their hair health journey and help them feel truly heard and understood.
What I am most proud of is how far I’ve come. I’ve stayed true to what I love and have continued to grow in both skill and heart. Creating my guide and getting it officially published and copyrighted was a huge moment for me. It represents so much dedication and care.
What sets me apart is the way I show up for my clients. I always take time to listen first. I never assume I know best, I want to hear your story, your goals, and what makes you feel beautiful. I work hard to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and never alone in your journey. I also believe deeply in community over competition. I love being part of a hairstylist community that lifts each other up and shares knowledge with love.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to remember that school is only the beginning. It gives you the basics, but your growth doesn’t stop there. There is so much amazing education out there, both online and in person, that can truly help you take your skills and your business to the next level. Stay curious. Keep learning. And don’t be afraid to try new things.
Investing in mannequins might feel like a lot at first, but they will become your best friend. Practice whenever you can, and give yourself permission to grow at your own pace. You do not have to have it all figured out right away.
Something that’s really close to my heart is the idea of community over competition. Other stylists should be your cheerleaders, not your critics. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, who share their knowledge, and who want to see you succeed. The beauty industry is big enough for all of us to shine.
One thing I wish I had known when I first started is that not everyone will be on your side, and that’s okay. You don’t need to prove yourself to anyone. Focus on what brings you joy, on the services you feel passionate about, and never let anyone pressure you into doing something that doesn’t feel right for you.
And lastly, know that there are incredible educators and resources out there you just have to be willing to look for them. Keep your heart open and your mind eager, and you’ll find everything you need to build the career of your dreams.
