Life & Work with Morgan Converse of Austin, Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Converse.

Hi Morgan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Converse Candids Photography was born from a spark ignited in 2017 when I craved more than just routine. I needed purpose. A thoughtful gift – a camera – turned into something far greater than I ever imagined. I began offering free “acts of kindness” photo sessions, and with every click, something awakened. I realized I wasn’t just taking pictures—I was helping people see themselves, often for the first time, in a kinder, more loving light.

It became crystal clear: this wasn’t just a hobby. It was a calling.

So, I made the bold decision to leave the full-time job I had committed nearly a decade to. Because for me, photography isn’t the ultimate passion – self-love is. And through the lens, I found a way to help others reconnect with their bodies, their stories, and their inner light. My mission is simple but powerful: to inspire others to love themselves just as deeply as I’ve learned to love myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way and honestly, I’m still learning. One of the biggest lessons came a little late: learning to say no. For a long time, I believed that just because I could do it all, I should. I said yes to everything, even when it didn’t light me up inside. But eventually, I learned to protect my energy and passion by setting boundaries and honoring what truly sparked joy for me.

I no longer photograph weddings, newborns, milestone sessions, or most events. Those moments are beautiful but they’re no longer where my heart lies. My deepest fulfillment comes from photographing boudoir and empowerment sessions, high school seniors, families, and branding. These sessions allow both me and my clients to come alive. They challenge me, push me outside my comfort zone, and most importantly, they create space for healing, for confidence, for self-love.

Saying no helped me say yes to myself.

I’ve also learned that I don’t need to be everything to everyone. I’m part of a vibrant, talented creative community and there are artists who love and thrive in the spaces I’ve stepped away from. That’s the beauty of community: there’s room for all of us, and we serve each other better when we honor what brings us joy.

There is no competition when you’re grounded in purpose.

When we lean into what lights us up and embrace our own self-love journey, we show up more fully for our clients, our community, and ourselves.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
If I could photograph just one type of session every single day, it would be boudoir and empowerment. There’s nothing like watching someone see their spark for the first time through my lens – that moment when their eyes light up with recognition of their own beauty, power, and worth. That is what sets my soul on fire.

My passion lies in helping people reconnect with their magic. In reminding them that their words hold power, that their body deserves the same love and kindness they so effortlessly give to others. These sessions are about more than photos they’re about permission. Permission to take up space. To pause. To celebrate every part of their journey that brought them to this exact moment.

Outside of boudoir, I also specialize in high school senior portraits and business branding. These sessions are often just as vulnerable – marking major transitions, identity shifts, and new chapters. Whether someone comes into a session brimming with confidence or searching for it, my purpose is the same: to reflect their light back to them. I take the time to get to know each client – their passions, hobbies, favorite playlists—and create an experience as unique as they are.

I thrive on variety. Repeating the same kind of session can burn me out, but the mix of boudoir, seniors, families, and branding allows me to stay energized, present, and inspired.

What truly sets me apart, though, is what happens beyond the photos: the self-love conversations, the affirming space I hold, especially for all bodies and all humans—including those in the LGBTQIA+ community. I don’t just speak about self-love—I live it. I show up, I take up space, and I create it for others. Because I believe when we love ourselves deeply, we ripple that love into our communities.

Every year, I lead a two-day workshop for 100 young girls focused on self-love and body image, through a local nonprofit that helps me be the adult I needed when I was younger. Confident girls grow into confident women who shape the world. I’m also a mentor with the Mower County CEO Program, pairing with high school students as they build their own businesses and navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. And I speak to local schools about self-worth, confidence, and body positivity because this work starts early and matters deeply.

Photography is just the medium I use to tell the story but my mission is bigger than the camera. If I can inspire even one person to find their spark, to feel seen, to feel worthy – I’ll always say yes to that. Even when it’s scary. Especially when it’s powerful.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Photography is such a beautiful, yet often luxurious service and with so many people facing challenges right now, I find myself questioning where that leaves my heart and my work moving forward. Is this the moment to pivot? To explore new paths like writing, teaching, or stepping into leadership? Maybe it’s time to lean into documentary-style shoots—less posed, more authentic moments, deeper stories waiting to be uncovered.

I don’t yet know where this journey will lead me next, but one thing is certain: my story will be told again and again. Because if even one person discovers their spark through it, every frame, every moment, every word is always worth sharing.
