Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Spellerberg.
Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I like to say I fell into flowers, or I was destined to be a florist. One of the two! I grew up in the country surrounded by fields of wildflowers and forests. My mom was an avid gardener with the mantra that if something was going to grow in her garden it had to fend for itself. It was there that my love for all things botanical grew.
My first job in high school was at a local flower shop. I washed buckets, answered the phone and helped customers all while learning the botanical names for each of the flowers. Eventually, they saw I had an eye for design and started teaching me the basics of floristry, I was hooked.
Over the years I’ve worked for different flower shops around Minnesota and Wisconsin and freelanced for large scale wedding event companies in Dallas designing high end weddings. I opened my own business in 2019 right before Covid hit. Not great timing but I learned a lot and made some really good connections that year.
Today I design what I’m most passionate about and that’s wedding and events. I love being a part of one of the most important days of someone’s life. To me, floral is the magic that brings a wedding from beautiful to extravagant!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the hardest things was timing. I launched my business mere months before Covid hit and weddings were on lockdown. I had to pivot, since weddings weren’t happening I worked at local flower shops and honed my craft by doing styled shoots. Looking back that was a really hard time but it helped me find my true passion for weddings and designing large scale installations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe that flowers are an art medium. Like a painter uses different brush strokes to add texture, I use different blooms, foliage, moss, and branches to bring texture and a hint of the unexpected. I do this by incorporating unique elements such as foraged branches or grasses to my wedding work that you wouldn’t typically find on your usual Pinterest board.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Instagram is where I find a lot of inspiration. I love good design wether it is how a chef plates a dish, an interior designer stages a room or a street artists tags a wall, there is inspiration that can be pulled from anywhere.
