Susan Costello Sepulveda shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Susan , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Mornings are hard for me, but my goldendoodle makes me roll out of bed to let her out. After letting Canilla is in (my ca-noodle doodle), we play some and of course I need a cup of mojo. We watch the news and share some puppy snuggle time, then off I go to attend to errands, appointment or the art studio.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist residing in Minnesota painting mostly abstract impressionist flowers and nature through an intuitive process. I have no reference photo, just my memory or experience that manifests throughout the art process.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I believe I was in Junior High School. I took a class in art with Hans Christian, it was he himself that noticed my love and potential in art. He introduced me to the art of murals. Mr. Christian selected myself and a handful of other students to create murals throughout the halls of the school. It was a great experience and an honor to leave my mark on the school. The murals remained a constant presence at the school for many years for students and facility to enjoy.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
Now days my priority is myself and family. My art is a big part of me, but it not the most import to me. It took me many years to realize that time doesn’t stand still, it just rushes right past you. I had to take a step back after working many years where my career can first. I lost years of watching my children grow up, quality time will friends and family. having no plan in life, just chasing my tail. So, I now step carefully, plan my days and weeks not leaving myself, nor family behind.
My art practice is still included in my days, everyday for a few hours. I can accomplish much in just a few hours. A painting can manifest and grow in a two to four hours. There are time I able to create a painting in a a few days and other times a weeks. It’s when I come to a fork in the road there is further delay in the out come.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Never grow up. I think its important to sometimes act like child. Run through sprinkler, skip, swing and sing silly songs, or roll down the hill i the grass. Make life simple and fun. Yes there are adult matters we need to face/attend. Keep care of them and enjoy the simple things in life.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
There are a few things or places that bring me peace;
I love being in nature. The smell of sweet nectar of the flower, trees leaves rustling in the wind, the sounds of the birds and the crush of the ocean waves as they roll in. Nature has the most beautiful and colorful scenes that has been bestowed to us.
These experience’s I translate on canvas/paper through color, composition and brushstrokes. My paintings, I share not just to showcase my art, but to share the experience I observed. Allowing others to live through my journey.
