Story & Lesson Highlights with Stephanie Newman of Lakeville

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Stephanie Newman. Check out our conversation below.

Stephanie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often think photographers just show up with a camera, snap a few pictures, edit them on the computer, and send them off. But the truth is, running a photography business is so much more than that. Behind the scenes, we’re also social media managers, web designers, accountants, and business strategists. And on top of all that, many of us juggle full-time jobs, families, and countless other responsibilities.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Stephanie! I’m a natural light photographer based in Lakeville, Minnesota, specializing in senior photography. My heart behind the camera is simple: I want to create photos that feel joyful, genuine, and timeless—images that truly capture you.

Photography has always been more than pictures to me—it’s about connection. I love getting to know my clients, laughing together, and creating a session that feels relaxed, fun, and meaningful. Whether I’m helping a senior feel confident in front of the camera, my goal is to give you photographs that not only look beautiful, but take you right back to that moment years from now.

What makes my work special? I bring a mix of professionalism and playfulness to every session. You’ll get plenty of guidance on posing, styling, and locations so you never feel “stiff” or unsure—and I’ll be cheering you on the whole way. My clients often tell me they walked away feeling more comfortable, confident, and even had fun (yes, photo sessions can actually be fun!).

Outside of photography, I’m a wife, mama, and coffee and book enthusiast who loves cozy nights in and celebrating the big and small moments of life. I believe in making the most of the season you’re in, and that’s exactly what I hope to capture for you—your story, right now, in all its beauty.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds between people often break when trust is damaged—through dishonesty, betrayal, neglect, or simply letting silence and unresolved conflict create distance. Pride and selfishness can also chip away at connection when one person’s needs consistently outweigh the other’s.

What restores those bonds is almost always the opposite: honesty, forgiveness, and open communication. Choosing to listen, to show up consistently, to admit wrongs, and to extend grace goes a long way. Love is the thread that holds it all together—when it’s present, even broken relationships have the chance to be mended.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Um, yes. Definitely early on in starting my business. There’s been a few times throughout the year where I’ve had a difficult session or hard season in life where I wanted to quit. But I love what I do and that keeps me going.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Honesty, integrity, love for others and myself, and humility are the values that resonate most deeply within me. These principles guide my actions and shape my interactions, serving as the foundation for meaningful relationships and personal growth. I believe that living authentically, treating everyone with compassion, and remaining grounded in humility are essential for a fulfilling life.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, and it’s definitely happened. I try to give 100% with everything I do, and I don’t necessarily need the “praise” but it would be nice to be recognized for my effort every once in awhile. I believe in putting my best foot forward, regardless of external validation. This approach not only helps me achieve my goals but also fosters personal growth and satisfaction. While acknowledgement is appreciated, the true reward comes from the dedication and hard work invested in each task.
