Community Highlights: Meet Natasha Givens of Nattykake Artisan Edibles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Givens.

Hi Natasha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey really began long before NattyKake Artisan Edibles had a name. I grew up watching my mother and aunts bake, meanwhile learning stories of my grandparents. How they worked with herbs, fruits, and plants to create healing tonics and salves for their community in Trinidad. That connection to culture and ancestral wisdom has always been part of me. After spending over 15 years as a corporate art director and hobby cake designer, I felt the pull to merge my creativity with that deep-rooted heritage.

In 2018, I started baking infused treats in small batches for friends and family. What began as a way to bring joy and healing soon grew into a full-fledged brand. When the pandemic hit, many businesses were struggling, but for me it became an unexpected time of growth—I leaned on my artistry, leaned into storytelling, and committed to creating premium, small-batch edibles that were as whimsical as they were intentional.

Today, NattyKake is known for handcrafted artisan cakes, luxury cookies, and infused confections that reflect both my Caribbean American roots and my vision for elevating edible culture. Beyond just baking, I see my work as a form of healing, empowerment, and community building. Each cake, cookie, or caramel carries a little bit of that legacy forward. What started as a passion project in my kitchen has now become a platform—one where I get to educate, inspire, and create joy while also helping shape conversations around cannabis, culture, and creativity.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road—but I think that’s part of what makes the journey so meaningful. Building a cannabis-based business, especially as a first-generation Caribbean American woman, comes with unique challenges. There are regulatory hurdles, stigma around the plant, and the reality that opportunities and resources aren’t always equally accessible in this industry.

On top of that, like many entrepreneurs, I had to navigate financial constraints, balancing family responsibilities, and the uncertainty of running a business during a pandemic. There were seasons when I questioned if people would really value what I was creating, or if I could sustain my vision long-term. At times, it felt like I was carving out a path that didn’t exist yet—educating customers, pushing for representation, and creating space where people like me could be seen and heard in this industry. I am extremely grateful for those – which are many – who have embraced me within the cannabis community and put me in spaces that are equitable.

But every obstacle became fuel. I learned to pivot, to lean into my creativity, and to stay grounded in my “why.” The struggles shaped NattyKake into more than a bakery—it became a movement rooted in resilience, joy, and culture. Each challenge I’ve faced has reminded me that I’m not just baking for today, I’m building a legacy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
NattyKake Artisan Edibles is all about creating joyful, community-centered experiences through handcrafted treats. I specialize in small-batch artisan cakes, cookies, and infused confections that are as whimsical as they are delicious. People know me for adding a sense of fun and artistry to the edible space — whether it’s a “stash jar” cake, a speakeasy-inspired dessert spread, or a giant cookie drop that feels indulgent and nostalgic.

What sets NattyKake apart is that it’s never just about the product — it’s about the experience. From playful packaging to curated menus, I want every detail to surprise, delight, and connect people. Community is at the heart of my brand. I host pop-ups, partner with local businesses, and teach interactive classes so people can not only enjoy the treats, but also learn about infusion, baking, and how to explore cannabis safely and creatively.

I’m especially proud to serve on the Board of the Minnesota Cannabis College, where I get to bring my perspective as an edibles entrepreneur to help shape education and opportunities in this emerging industry. Sharing knowledge is just as important to me as sharing cake — whether through my infused baking guides, workshops, or community events, I see NattyKake as both a place of indulgence and a place of empowerment.

I’m most proud that NattyKake has become known as more than just a bakery — it’s a place where people come to discover new flavors, celebrate milestones, and feel part of something creative and uplifting. Whether you’re trying a caramel, a cookie, or a custom cake, I want every customer to walk away with a smile and a memory.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to trust the process and stay rooted in my “why.” Entrepreneurship isn’t a straight line — there are moments of doubt, setbacks, and times when things don’t go according to plan. But I’ve found that when I lean into my creativity and stay authentic, doors always open.
