Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Wells.
Hi Jonathan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Without a incredibly long narrative, my father was a tax accountant and I started working for him at a very young age running ads door to door and replacing tax code pages in books before the internet was a thing. All I remember was getting a nickel per page I replaced. Over the years, my responsibilities increased and the foundation was around the world of Debits and Credits in accounting. I was doing financial statements in high school and by the time college came around, I was doing individual tax returns. Deciding not to go to medical school as I was more captivated with the time value of money, I got a degree in accounting and economics from the U of MN. I started full time before i graduated officially in 2000 and eventually worked my way up to be a 50% partner with my father and we worked together for many years. Eventually all things must changed and in 2016 i bought him out of the firm and here we are today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Pretty smooth, working with family has it challenges but we got through it. Otherwise, growth of the firm, opening second location, hiring more people always provides excitement while attempting to maintain quality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a full service Tax accounting firm. We specialize in tax planning and tax minimization strategies as well as the compliance part of being self employed. We also provide tax preparation to the public in the individual space during the typical season. I am definitely most proud of the “unique soup” of staff as I like to call it. We have a lot of fun where everyone is happy to come to work. We spend a decent amount of time outside of work together in fun settings and retreats. The most important part of our “Brand” is that we look at our service as a “Return on investment”. Many time folks come to us and we are able to provide our knowledge such that we end up being free.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is simply a happy customer. But that tends to mean that we have communicated timely, completed the work accurately within the proper deadlines, and saved more tax dollars than we charge.
