Story & Lesson Highlights with Denny Meints of Minneapolis

Denny Meints shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Denny, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What battle are you avoiding?
As a owner of a leading Design-Build firm in Minneapolis, I know how important engaging with the community over social media is for our brand, but I’ve been avoiding this long-term necessity for several reasons. First of all, it seems like it could be come overwhelming to put myself out there everyday – truly a task without an end. Secondly, we’ve been making strategic investment into our team, internal systems, and processes – which might be deflecting, but giving my headspace to these unseen initiatives has been paying off!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Denny Meints and I own/operate Red Fox Remodeling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We’re a full-service design-build firm who specialize in creating uniquely tailored spaces for families to grow and flourish in. Our goal is to help our homeowners take a good house in a great location and turn it into their families forever home.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad has the most determined work ethic of anyone I know. It legitimately could be his legit answer for the cliché interview question about your greatest weakness (“I probably work too hard.”) But really, he taught me to give my full effort in whatever I put my hand to. Be it manual labor, number crunching, or networking – leave it all out there because then you’ll have no regrets with the outcome.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Of course! But as a small business owner, the only ultimate failure is to call it quits. I’ve lost money, resources, sleep – but I’ve learned that when I persevere, I grow personally/professionally and my business get’s stronger. Each day, no matter the challenges of running a small business, you have to ask yourself, “What could go right?”

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I truly believe that multi-generational living will continue to be a rising housing trend and it’s benefits go well beyond solutions to the housing crisis. I firmly believe that data that says families who choose to intentionally structure their lives and homes together have better mental health outcomes, better reported quality of life, and great longevity.

For Red Fox Remodeling, we support this initiative by building Accessory Dwelling Units – which can either be internal to an existing home (basement apartment), attached to an existing home (apartment addition), or completely detached housing units like a backyard grandmother suite.

We’re committed to helping Minnesota families realize their multigenerational family living goals through thoughtfully designed living spaces.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Building brand consistency, scalable systems, and ultimately leaving lasting positive impressions with our current customers, employees and vendors which will set the table for the impactful work we want to do across the Twin Cities at large in 7-10 years.
