Jamie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Hiking in the woods and being emersed in nature helps me lose track of time. If you’re ever in a bad mood and you go for a hike, I guarantee you will forget what you were mad about when you’re done. I love exploring and hiking! I am the Central Region Lead for She Ascends Hiking & Wellness and I oversee hiking guides in central Minnesota. I’ve been a part of the organization since 2021.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started Harmony Baking Company in 2022 after deciding to obtain my cottage foods licensed. I remember learning how to bake bread and other pastries at a very young age. I was actively involved in 4-H and learned many of those skills in the kitchen from my mom and grandma. My grandma baked pastries and pies at the local grocery store and restaurant in her retirement years.
I loved scones and loved trying new flavors at home. I was selling scones to friends and family and decided there was a demand there and wanted to give my business a go. I launched Harmony Baking Company, which has two meanings, and a little history. Harmony was the twin-city to the city of Hutchinson, where I live. The cities were too close together and later merged into what is now known at Hutchinson, MN. Harmony also means joy and that’s the feeling you get when you receive a delicious pastry or when you sink your teeth into one. Making food for others is my love language. It’s one way I can show someone I love and really care about them, or help someone in a time of need.
I primarily bake a variety of scones flavors and also specialize in cookies. I like to bake the “hits,” but also like to develop and pair unique flavors together to give customers a unique and elevated taste.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I don’t know if there’s a moment that really shaped how I see the world, but I do think there are several moments that have helped shape my perspective. I think traveling really opens up your eyes and perspective on things. It can help you better understand how and why people are the similar and different than you at the same time. It helps you appreciate what you have and keeps you more open-minded to opportunities and changes. Travel and trying new things has given me inspiration for new foods and recipes as well. At the end of the day, we are all the same in that we are wanting connection with others, to feel like we belong, and are a part of something.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Without failure, you cannot learn. You cannot be successful without learning from mistakes and refining and improving things. In failure, you have a better understanding of how things work and don’t work and then you can build and grow on them.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Being honest and always having integrity. If you say you’re going to do something, you do it, you show up. I think being transparent and always operating out of integrity is the only way to do business and work with customers. Those things will instantly build trust and without that, you cannot be successful in life or in relationships. Be kind to others as it will go a long way in life.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Working! I would travel to as many places as I could. I would soak in as much time with my family as much as possible and live the biggest and fullest life!
