Mastel’s Health Foods was founded in 1968 by John Mastel, a trailblazer who believed deeply in the power of natural health long before it was mainstream. What began as a small, community-focused shop in Saint Paul quickly grew into a trusted local institution — a place where people could come not just to buy supplements and whole foods, but to learn, connect, and feel cared for.
Over the decades, Mastel’s has built a reputation for exceptional customer service, knowledgeable staff, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. That legacy continues today under the ownership of Alina Hornfeldt and Lauren Gaffney, who began as employees and eventually took the reins to carry John’s mission forward. Together, they’ve preserved Mastel’s classic neighborhood charm while modernizing its offerings, expanding local partnerships, and creating a supportive environment for both customers and staff.
More than 55 years later, Mastel’s remains the Twin Cities’ oldest and most beloved natural health store — a testament to community, integrity, and the belief that true wellness comes from care, knowledge, and connection.

The pandemic was one of the most challenging times in Mastel’s long history. Like so many small businesses, we faced uncertainty every single day — navigating supply shortages, changing safety protocols, and the weight of wanting to protect both our staff and our customers. But what carried us through was our incredible community. People showed up for us in ways we’ll never forget, and we did everything we could to show up for them in return.
Coming out the other side, we’re stronger, closer, and more committed than ever to our mission. The experience reminded us why Mastel’s exists in the first place — to be a source of health, connection, and genuine care, no matter what the world brings
