Hidden Gems: Meet Jillian Kirkeide of HeartSync Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Kirkeide.

Hi Jillian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After years of working as a music therapist in hospice, I became curious about finding ways for patients to tell their stories and leave their legacies through the power of music. This is when I came across the idea of heartbeat recordings, through a fantastic music therapist named Brian Schreck out of TN. I followed some of his methods to start providing heartbeat recordings to my hospice patients. This soon became a very requested service because of how unique and special they are. Over time, I began to realize that this amazing service is somewhat limited because someone needs to be signed on to hospice or be in a hospital where there is a music therapist that also knows how to do heatbeat recordings is available. That is when I decided to start HeartSync Music, a private practice focused solely on providing heartbeat recordings to the wider community. My goal is to make this amazing project available to anyone who might desire to have a precious keepsake like this, without having to be admitted to a hospital or on hospice. I’m hoping to grow my business so that I can reach people in many different situations who would benefit from this service.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Initially, the biggest challenge was finding equipment and learning how to use it in a way that made the heartbeat recording audible. As time went on, technology became better and I became better at using it. Now I am able to record a heartbeat on anybody and even include multiple heartbeats in one recording. I’m also able to customize recordings in such a way that it speaks to each individual. I can include things such as nature sounds, spoken word poems, stories and Bible verses along with the music and everything in between. I’m even able to include the patient or their family playing instruments or singing. The possibilities are really endless. The biggest challenge at this time, is getting the message out about what my business provides because it is such a unique service. I’m looking forward to doing the work of educating and providing opportunities for people to learn about this amazing project.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about HeartSync Music?

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I think back to the moment I knew I wanted to be a musician. It was in sixth grade when all of the students had a chance to explore choir, band and orchestra. Nobody in my family was a musical, so I was unfamiliar with many of the instruments. I will never forget the moment when the orchestra teacher played the Titanic theme on the violin to show the students about orchestra. (I know that age is me!). My 12 year-old heart just melted! It was love at first note. I was sold after that and began playing the violin. Many years later here I am working as a music therapist!
