Rising Stars: Meet MJ Hill-Adams of Roseville

Today we’d like to introduce you to MJ Hill-Adams.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The story of how Trentquility began is a little unconventional. At 52, I found myself a pivotal place in my life, adjusting to the end of a 22-year marriage and a recent divorce. I kept thinking… “What’s next?” “What now?”
It was my daughter who encouraged me to focus my energy on something I truly love. She said, “Mom, why not do something with your oils?” I have been using essential oils, natural ingredients, and homeopathic remedies for years, but I had no idea where to start. One day, I stumbled across a business that was closing, and selling all of its inventory of oils, raw shea butter and other materials; and on a whim, I bought it. It was a total impulse buy. When I got everything home, I remember thinking, “What have I done?” “This is insane!” That inventory sat untouched for months before I finally started experimenting. From there, it was a journey of trial and error, learning what worked, and discovering my own style. (I am a chronic insomniac, so there were plenty late nights).
Once I found my groove, I faced the next challenge: naming the brand. Nothing felt right, until one day, it came to me.
Trentquility was born from both deep love and profound loss, named in memory of my son, Trent. His absence is a part of me that will never fade, but I believe his gentle spirit continues to watch over our family. This collection of personal and home products is a reflection of the love and serenity his spirit has brought into our lives. Each product, from nourishing body butters to calming oils, is crafted with care, offering a moment of calm and warmth in the midst of life’s chaos.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like any business, there have been natural ups and downs—learning how to balance risk and reward, manage expenses, source quality supplies, and make smart investment decisions. I’ve owned businesses before, so I knew going in that challenges would be part of the journey.
One of the toughest parts has been keeping consistent customer engagement. There have been times when I’ve spent days, even weeks, preparing for an event, making products, setting up displays, and planning every last detail, only to have little or no sales. Those moments can definitely be discouraging after putting in so much hard work. But over time, I’ve learned to trust the process and keep my eyes on the bigger picture.
What keeps me motivated is the amazing feedback and support I’ve received from customers. Securing strong wholesale clients and hearing genuine testimonials from people who love and continually repurchase my products reminds me why I started this journey. My biggest focus right now is expanding my reach and getting my products in front of more people. Once they try them, they see the quality and benefits, and they usually come back for more. Obviously, with any business, the goal is to be successful and make money, but the reality is, nothing happens overnight. So I’m continuing to build awareness by showing up; whether it’s through pop-ups, events, or community gatherings. Basically, anywhere I can share what I love and connect with people directly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve spent most of my adult life in corporate America. My professional expertise is rooted in regulatory and statutory compliance, with a strong focus on servicing regulations for federal agencies and government entities. It’s definitely nothing glamorous, quite boring in fact. But, I take pride in my ability to adapt to almost any environment and in my ongoing commitment to learning and growth.
For many years, I have focused on working out of necessity and doing well, but never fully engaging the creative side of who I am. Now, I’ve found a balance that allows me to merge my analytical strengths with my creative passions. When I’m in what I affectionately call “the lab,” I’m creating products that come from a place of authenticity and love. Each item I make is a reflection of care, intention, and purpose.
Trentquility carries my personal imprint, because it’s not just something I make; it’s something I feel. My goal is to leave customers with more than just an item they purchased, but with a sense of connection, and a little extra joy in their day. That’s what I’m most proud of—turning my creativity into something meaningful that resonates with others.

What matters most to you? Why?
As people of color, we often experience feeling unseen, unheard, unnurtured, and at times, simply forgotten.
As a black woman entrepreneur, it’s deeply important to have the opportunity to represent myself in business; it sends a powerful message of stability, positivity, and confidence. More than that, it represents unity and serves as inspiration for others to do the same. My hope is to grow Trentquility, with the goal of creating generational wealth and building a lasting legacy for my children. Something they can be proud of!
That being said, my products are intentionally and thoughtfully crafted to reflect the real-life needs and experiences of ALL people. Trentquility is more than self-care, it’s heart care. It’s a tribute to enduring love, the power of healing, and the peace that comes from connection and a tranquil soul.
