Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessi Veurink.
Hi Jessi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up with horses on my farm, and was very blessed to have them as a part of my every day life. Even as a young child, I always dreamt of having a big draft horse. I remember begging my parents for a draft horse, but it was just something that they were not able to accommodate. Fast-forward to 2017, my husband and I were in a place where we were finally able to make that dream come true! After much research on various draft horse breeds, we quickly set our hearts on the Shire horse. The largest breed of draft Horse. They are a very rare, gentle and hard-working breed. We had the goal of integrating these horses into every facet of our lives, including riding, showing and sharing them with the public via a carriage company. We have three daughters that we wanted to include in this dream, so we knew the quietness and gentleness of the Shire would make for a perfect addition. We purchased our first gelding in October 2017, and we just purchased our sixth Shire this year! We have no corporate sponsors, or no previous generations to hand us down equipment, horses, or knowledge. We are the first generation in this industry for our family, and it has truly been an act of dedication , passion, and love! My husband and I, together with our 3 daughters have gone from showing one single horse in halter classes to finally debuting a 6 horse hitch next summer! To top it all off, we stay very busy year-round sharing these amazing draft horses with the public through a variety of events throughout the state of Minnesota. It keeps our hearts very full! We are so proud of our horses and we will strive to continue our journey as strong advocates for the amazing Shire breed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I stated before, we have built this program from the ground up. We had no one come before us to show us the way or gift us with knowledge and equipment. We built this business through our own blood, sweat and tears, and from our own pocketbook. All while raising three children! I work full-time as a nurse, and my husband works in medical diagnostics. There have been many days that have been challenging physically, emotionally, and financially. Yet we have found that the harder we work, the greater our reward has been!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We spend our 9-5 hours at our day jobs and our evenings and weekends working on the farm. You will find us either training, showing, or working with our horses at different event events throughout the state. Our dedication to this industry and the life lessons that we are handing down to our children along the way is something that we are most proud of. We take a lot of pride in the thorough training and good demeanor of our horses and their ability to safely interact with the public. This is something that really sets us apart!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Opportunities like this interview to promote the Shire breed, and our business have been immensely helpful!
