Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Kendall.
Hi Todd, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ive been a life long entrepreneur, opening a cafe and grocery store when I was 19 to getting a patent on a baseball and tennis training device to now building custom one of a kind furniture pieces. We started Fillory from my kitchen remodel, Gus and I met while I was picking out a piece of black walnut for my countertop. Gus was selling slabs he had salvaged from Renstrom Tree service. We reconnected a few months later when he saw some of my work and asked if I wanted to open a furniture store! I said “I’m only 50, why not”!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth ride, seeing the vision and keeping the Faith has gotten us past all of that. We were kicked out of our first space because I was making to much dust, I told the owner I don’t make furniture, I make dust, furniture is just left over when I’m done!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart is my creativity, I tell client theirs nothing I can’t build….and so far, it’s worked out. We had a client that wanted a black walnut waterfall edge recessed into her granite, her builder said nobody will do that and he could find anyone, then they stopped into our showroom and asked if I would do it, and I did, it’s a show stopping in an already stunning addition they did on their home.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Trust the process, it all takes time and if you give up, you will never know where you could have gone!
