Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Krause.
Hi Stephen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Central Wisconsin town of Wausau was a great place to grow up in the early 1970’s and boasted excellent schools, pleasant views and other offerings expected from larger towns. Rib Mountain is viewable from many vantage points around Wausau and I thoroughly enjoyed skiing that mountain often. Educational highlights included having access to programmable computers in Middle School back in 1977. I enjoyed a rigorous class load, but I thoroughly loved escaping into Art Class the most. Adding to my art exposure were Summer Art Sessions at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Having my art displayed was also a thrill.
My Dad died of cancer in my 12th grade so I focused on Computer Science since this choice allowed for studying nearby and helping my family. Responsibilities grew to include working to fund my schooling, volunteer work, along with work around the home.
Graduating in 1981 with a Computer Degree allowed me to land a programming job in Minneapolis that same year. Liberty International promoted me to Senior Programmer Analyst a few years later. I enjoyed developing a Freight Logistics System aimed at economizing all forms of transportation by modeling and comparing all options simultaneously. Another exciting development was a state-of-the-art Data Warehouse System allowing for instantaneous query into all sales information. Included in my experience was Project Management Training offered by George Washington University and Numerous Technical and Marketing Courses offered by the University of Wisconsin Madison. My career was turning from Technical toward the Marketing that I love. In 2005 I became Marketing Executive at LDI’s Corporate Headquarters. This is important because it allowed me to join things technical with my beloved art and advertising. In all, I enjoyed 25 years of technical and marketing success at the Corporate Level.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not smooth at all. Personally, my dad’s death from cancer in 1981 was only the beginning of cancers throughout my immediate family. Professionally, I’ve encountered malignant business behaviors that had to be handled very carefully to achieve positive outcomes. Overall, working with diverse clients all over the globe is thoroughly enjoyable. Tackling technical tasks – from mundane to large – has a positive effect on my clients and handling these well brings me great joy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My experience includes carefully blending things technical with advertising arts. A love of people that includes closely listening between their words. And originating from humble beginnings helps me respect each client’s budget.
An example was my client in Cortez Florida. José was an immigrant from Cuba with a harrowing tale of his family’s emigration. José developed into an exceptional cook and eventually secured his own restaurant right off the Cortez Pier. Besides sharing riveting accounts of his past, José perfectly seasoned fresh grouper coming right off the boats in a way that everyone found irresistible. I met José after dining with him and we came to like each other. He trusted me enough to develop a website for his precious restaurant. That website gained José newfound exposure, like being featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins & Dives in 2011.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The Twin Cities offers a high standard for education, expansive parks and vast opportunities for all sorts of people. Our great number of World Class, Legacy Organizations, based right here – confirms that.
Despite all of this success, I am concerned over our communities’ inability to peacefully coalesce.
