Today we’d like to introduce you to Andra Suchy.
Hi Andra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on an actual farm in North Dakota in a musical family, where music was just part of everyday life. I’m still a little stunned when I think back on all the experiences I’ve had — from sitting on Pete Seeger’s lap at the Winnipeg Folk Festival as a kid, to performing with my family there, to years on A Prairie Home Companion, and collaborating with incredible musicians and bands throughout my career. I’ve also worked my butt off along the way, keeping side jobs and figuring things out, so I know I’ve earned a lot of it too. Every experience has shaped who I am as an artist, and I feel endlessly fortunate to have had this life in music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! My path has been anything but smooth. I grew up on a North Dakota farm in a musical family, so music was always part of life, but turning it into a career meant figuring things out as I went. After my divorce, starting over felt a little like Bambi on ice: awkward, scary, and completely unfamiliar, but necessary to keep moving forward.
I’ve done everything from overnights at SuperAmerica and Perkins, to picking orders at Funco, teaching cardio kickboxing, a little Muay Thai, and lots of commercial and voice-over work. Singing for projects I didn’t connect with taught me detachment and how to use my voice in service of someone else.
Life’s lows — heartbreak, loss, and major surgery — have shaped the highs, and I’ve learned that everyone has struggles of their own. I approach life and people with a lot more empathy and understanding than I did when I was younger, and I feel unbelievably lucky for the journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and musician who grew up on a North Dakota farm. Music was part of daily life — our family performed together and even recorded an album on cassette, The Suchys in Harmony — so I was making music professionally, in a way, even as a child. Over the years, I’ve shared the stage with legends including Brad Paisley, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, John Prine, Yo-Yo Ma, and Nick Lowe, performed on A Prairie Home Companion, and appeared at venues like The Ryman Auditorium, SXSW, Town Hall Theater, Wolf Trap, and First Avenue.
I’ve played in many Twin Cities bands, sung on numerous recordings, and contributed background harmonies for other groups. I’ve also done commercial and voice-over work, which taught me to use my voice in service of someone else without taking it personally.
What sets me apart is curiosity, persistence, and heart. I pour myself into every note and collaboration, and I’m proud when my work connects with listeners both technically and emotionally.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I feel incredibly lucky for the life I’ve had — even the messy, hard moments. Life has taught me resilience, empathy, and how to find joy and music even in the chaos. I’m grateful for the bands, recordings, stages, and collaborations — and for the friends and family who make it all meaningful.
These days, I’m building a life with my partner Steve, our animals, and our garden. Steve and I are separately, and sometimes together, making the best music of our lives, and we try to be the best versions of ourselves, a moment at a time. We’re still finding wonder and happiness in the small things and small moments — and the big ones too.
