Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Hesse.
Hi Heidi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was growing up, dogs were always part of my life and family. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, I settled into a career as a sound engineer for news and documentary productions. Then along came Bailey, my sweet, silly Old English Sheepdog. Bailey and I became a pet therapy team for Therapy Dogs Incorporated, visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Bailey loved the attention, and my role as a volunteer included acting as an evaluator for potential new therapy dog teams. This rewarding experience helped me learn about the subtleties of canine body language and human interactions. I continued volunteer with my next sheepdog, Lulu.
When Lulu started to slow down and hesitate at the stairs, I knew I had to do something. I always need my massage sessions to break up the knots from carrying heavy equipment, so why not my dog? I searched for a certified canine massage therapist and booked our first appointment. Just as I’d hoped, after a few sessions, Lulu’s stiffness subsided and some of her old bounce was back! Inspired by the obvious benefits of massage, I wanted to learn more—to help Lulu and as many dogs as I can. I enrolled in the Chicago School of Canine Massage(now Canis Bodyworks) and completing a 200-hour certification program that covers canine anatomy, physiology, palliative care, and various massage techniques. The modalities I studied include trigger point therapy, myofascial release, lymphatic massage, and pre- and post-surgical massage. I have advanced training in Applied Acupressure Fundamentals and Post Surgical Massage and Edema Management. I am certified in Cold Laser Therapy through The American Institute of Medical Laser Applications and Holistic Animal Studies. I am nationally certified through NBCAAM: The National Board of Certification for Animal Acupressure and Massage.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. Like most small business owners, I learned pretty quickly that getting established takes time, patience, and a lot of adaptability. I started my canine massage business in 2016, so I had a few solid years under my belt before the pandemic arrived — and then everything changed. My work is hands-on and done inside people’s homes, and suddenly we weren’t supposed to be anywhere near each other. That period was incredibly challenging, It took some rebuilding afterward, but I eventually got back on track..
There’s also an emotional piece to what I do. I work with a lot of senior dogs, which is one of my favorite parts of the job, but it also means I say a lot of goodbyes. On top of that, being a small business owner means you’re always thinking about the next client and how to keep things moving forward. It’s a constant evolution. But even with the tough moments, helping dogs feel better is still the thing that brings me the most joy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a certified canine massage therapist, and I run a mobile massage business where I travel to people’s homes so their dogs can relax in a familiar, low-stress environment. I work with all kinds of dogs, but I have a real soft spot for seniors and dogs dealing with mobility issues, arthritis, anxiety, or recovery from injuries. I’m known for being calm, patient, and pretty tuned in to what a dog is telling me — even the shy or wiggly ones usually settle in once they realize I’m there to help.
In addition to my hands-on work, I also teach. I lead classes through Minneapolis Community Ed and other organizations I partner with regularly, and I offer private in-home classes for pet parents who want to learn how to support their own dogs. Teaching has become one of my favorite parts of this job.
What I’m most proud of is being able to bring real relief and comfort to a dog. Knowing you’ve made a difference in a dog’s life (and in their person’s life) is everything.
I think what sets me apart is how individually I approach each dog. I don’t follow a routine — I watch, I listen, and I tailor the session to what that dog needs on that day. And coming to their home allows me to care for them where they feel safest. At the heart of it, I just love helping dogs feel better and giving their families a bit of comfort too.
How do you think about happiness?
DOGS! Dogs make me happy. Just being around them, seeing their quirks, their little expressions — it all just lifts me up. And I really love knowing I helped. When a dog settles in, relaxes, or moves a little easier after a session, it’s the best feeling. That’s what makes all of this worth it for me.
