Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Marxen.
Hi Mark, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I originally began my career as a bathroom installer, specializing in high-end, custom projects with a particular focus on tile work and shower systems. In 2022, I took the leap and started my own business, initially operating under the name Timberline Tiling. For the first few years, I focused heavily on bathroom renovations throughout the Northland, building a reputation for detailed craftsmanship and quality work.
As demand grew, so did the scope of the company. I gradually expanded beyond bathrooms into roofing, siding, kitchen remodels, and full-scale home renovations. Last year, I made a shift in our business model to better reflect the range of services we offer and rebranded the company as Oriole Home Renovations.
The name Oriole Home Renovations comes from a lifelong love of birds—particularly the oriole. When I was younger, I wanted to be an ornithologist, and I’ve always been drawn to the oriole’s bold, vibrant colors and precision in nature. Orioles are one of the few birds that build custom nests and that same appreciation for detail, craftsmanship, and intentional design carries over into how we approach our work today.
Today, Oriole Home Renovations continues to grow, and we are in the process of building out a new office in downtown Duluth. It represents an exciting next chapter for the company as we continue to evolve from a small specialty operation into a full-service renovation firm while staying true to the quality and values that built the business from the start.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but that’s also been one of the most valuable parts of the process. In renovation work, every job comes with hidden problems that simply can’t be predicted until the project is underway. No two houses are built the same, especially in older homes, so adaptability is critical. We are constantly identifying problems in the field and developing practical, long-term solutions in real time.
Beyond the jobsite, the bigger challenge has been the business side of the company. Transitioning from being the person swinging the hammer every day to managing projects, people, schedules, and finances has been a major learning curve. Letting go of control, learning to delegate, and building systems that allow the company to run efficiently has taken time and patience.
Those challenges have forced me to grow not just as a contractor, but as a business owner. Every setback has helped sharpen our processes, improve communication, and ultimately build a stronger, more resilient company.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Oriole Home Renovations is a Duluth-based, full-service residential renovation company focused on high-quality remodels and exterior work. Our services range from bathrooms and kitchens to roofing, siding, windows, and larger renovation projects, with an emphasis on thoughtful planning and execution.
We’re known for being fair, transparent, and detail-oriented. We don’t believe in overcharging or upselling work that isn’t necessary, and we take pride in treating our clients and their homes with care. Every project is approached with close attention to detail and a commitment to delivering top-quality results.
From a brand perspective, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built with our clients. Oriole Home Renovations represents accountability, craftsmanship, and intention. We don’t chase volume or shortcuts; we focus on delivering consistent quality and creating spaces homeowners feel confident investing in.
What I want readers to know is that Oriole isn’t just a renovation company—it’s a team that values long-term relationships, stands behind its work, and takes pride in doing things the right way.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by the impact I have on the people around me. It’s about leaving relationships better than I found them—clients who feel taken care of, employees who feel respected, and people who are genuinely glad they crossed paths with me. If I’m doing honest work, treating people fairly, and creating positive experiences along the way, that matters more to me than any single metric.
At the end of the day, success is knowing that I showed up with integrity, took pride in what I did, and left behind a trail of happy people.
