Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Fikes.
Hi Bryan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My first business was a mistletoe stand when I was eight years old. It taught me early lessons about location, presentation, and human behavior—long before I knew words like “marketing” or “conversion.” What started as a childhood hustle quietly set the direction for an entrepreneurial life.
That instinct carried into my professional career, where I began building and scaling digital marketing agencies. In 2007, I founded Zenergy Internet Marketing, which evolved into Zenergy Works in 2009. Over the next decade, I grew the agency into a multi-million-dollar business, handling digital marketing and advertising for hundreds of business verticals—from local service companies to national brands. That hands-on experience across so many industries gave me a rare, inside view of what actually drives growth and what wastes time and money.
In 2017, I sold my interest in Zenergy Works. After years of building at full speed, I stepped away from the agency world to focus on personal projects and other entrepreneurial pursuits. That time away gave me clarity—and perspective. I realized I still loved the work, but I wanted to do it differently.
That realization led to Bonsai Marketing. Bonsai is my return to the agency world, built with intention and shaped by decades of experience. It’s a more focused, more human approach to marketing—cutting through the noise, aligning strategy with execution, and helping businesses grow in a way that’s sustainable, grounded, and built to last.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve won big and I’ve lost big—more than once. That’s part of the real entrepreneurial story that usually gets edited out.
My first agency started with $250 and a laptop. No safety net, no investors—just belief, hustle, and a willingness to figure things out as I went. Early on, I learned that landing clients is only half the battle. Cash flow, margins, and proper accounting aren’t optional skills—you either learn them, or they eventually teach you the hard way.
There were periods of rapid growth where everything seemed to click, followed by moments where a single decision, missed detail, or timing issue created real setbacks. Each cycle forced me to level up—not just as a marketer, but as a business owner. I learned how to manage risk, build systems, and make decisions that protect the long-term health of the business, not just short-term wins.
Those experiences shaped how I operate today. The wins built confidence. The losses built discipline. Together, they gave me perspective—and a deep respect for what it actually takes to build something that lasts.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a lifelong entrepreneur and digital marketing strategist who’s spent decades helping businesses grow by cutting through noise and focusing on what actually works. I specialize in building practical, data-driven marketing systems for local and service-based businesses—systems that don’t just look good on paper, but drive real, measurable results.
Over the course of my career, I’ve handled digital marketing and advertising across hundreds of business verticals, from small local operators to multi-location and national brands. That breadth of experience is something I’m deeply proud of—it’s given me a rare, real-world understanding of how different industries operate, where marketing breaks down, and how to adapt strategy without losing simplicity.
What sets me apart is perspective. I’ve built and scaled a multi-million-dollar agency, sold my interest, stepped away, and intentionally came back to the agency world with a different mindset. I’ve won big and lost big, learned hard lessons about cash flow, accounting, and sustainability, and now operate with clarity instead of chaos. That experience shapes how I advise clients—I don’t chase trends, I build foundations.
Today, through Bonsai Marketing, my focus is on alignment: strategy, execution, and long-term growth working together. I’m most proud of creating a business that reflects who I am now—calm, disciplined, and intentional—while helping other business owners grow without burning out. It’s marketing with experience, balance, and purpose behind it.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that surprises most people is that the calm, “zen” approach I bring to marketing today was forged through a lot of intensity earlier in my career. From the outside, it may look like everything has always been steady and intentional—but that balance came from years of building fast, pushing hard, and learning where burnout lives.
I’ve intentionally slowed things down. I spend a lot of time thinking, refining systems, and simplifying instead of chasing constant growth or the next shiny tactic. Some of my best ideas don’t come from screens or dashboards, but from stepping away—whether that’s time with my family, being outdoors, or just giving myself space to think.
People often expect nonstop hustle from an entrepreneur. What surprises them is that I believe clarity beats chaos every time—and that doing less, but doing it right, is usually what creates the biggest results.
