Today we’d like to introduce you to Awet Okbay.
Hi Awet, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began with a deep love for music and a desire to tell stories through sound. Growing up, music wasn’t just entertainment, it was a way of expressing identity, resilience, and hope. I started creating music with very limited resources, learning by listening, practicing, and trusting my instincts.
Over time, I stayed committed to improving my craft, blending traditional influences with modern styles, especially in jazz and instrumental music. The road wasn’t easy—there were many challenges but I never stopped believing in my vision. Each project taught me something new, and every setback pushed me to work harder and stay focused.
Today, I’m honored to be recognized internationally and to represent Eritrea and African music on a global stage. My journey is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the power of staying true to your passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. Growing up in East Africa with very limited resources, access to instruments, studios, and formal training was not easy. I had to rely on creativity, discipline, and self-learning to develop my skills.
There were times when opportunities were scarce, support was limited, and progress felt slow. Balancing daily responsibilities while pursuing music was a real challenge. But those struggles shaped my character, strengthened my work ethic, and deepened my appreciation for every opportunity I now receive.
Looking back, those times taught me resilience, patience, and faith and they continue to inspire the music I create today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a composer, instrumentalist, arranger and producer specializing in east African traditional music smooth jazz, and Afro-jazz fusion. My work blends traditional African melodies and rhythms—especially from Eritrea and East Africa with modern jazz and contemporary sounds.
I am known for creating emotionally rich, melodic instrumental music that tells stories without words. My focus is on authenticity, cultural pride, and musical excellence.
I am most proud of being internationally recognized as an African jazz artist and representing Eritrea on a global stage, especially as an instrumentalist a path that is not always easy or common.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge deep cultural roots with modern production while maintaining a unique sound that is both soulful and globally accessible.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice is to stay patient, consistent, and true to your vision. Don’t wait for perfect conditions—start with what you have and grow from there. Discipline and persistence matter more than talent alone.
I wish I had known earlier that setbacks are not failures, but lessons. Trust the process, invest in your craft, and surround yourself with people who believe in your purpose. Most importantly, never let your circumstances define your limits let your passion define your future
