Community Highlights: Meet Kristen Carlson of Studio Rogue Interior Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Carlson.

Hi Kristen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve spent over a decade working in interior design after earning my Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University’s accredited Interior Design program. Early in my career, I worked alongside a custom home builder and architect, where I gained hands-on experience as both an Interior Designer and Project Manager. That background shaped my appreciation for collaboration and the importance of designing spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

Today, I’m the Principal Designer and Owner of Studio Rogue Interior Design, where I focus on creating personalized, livable spaces that reflect each client’s unique story. I’m also proud to be a board member of the Building Industry Association of the Red River Valley as well as the chair of its Professional Women in Building Council.

When I’m not designing, I love spending time with my husband, Spencer, and our son, Kade, who keep life fun, busy, and full of inspiration.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I think those challenges have helped shape both my career and my perspective as a designer and business owner. Working in the construction and design industry means navigating tight timelines, evolving budgets, and managing many moving parts at once. Early in my career, learning how to balance creativity with the realities of construction, client expectations, and project management was a steep but valuable learning curve. Starting my own business also came with its share of uncertainty and risk, but it pushed me to grow in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise. Each challenge has strengthened my problem-solving skills, reinforced the importance of communication and collaboration, and ultimately made me more confident in how I serve my clients.

We’ve been impressed with Studio Rogue Interior Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Studio Rogue Interior Design is a full-service residential interior design studio focused on creating highly personalized, functional, and thoughtfully curated spaces. We specialize in new construction, remodels, and full-home furnishings, working closely with homeowners, builders, and trade partners from initial concept through final installation. Our goal is to simplify what can often feel like an overwhelming process and help clients feel confident and excited about the spaces they’re creating.

Studio Rogue is known for balancing elevated design with real-life livability. We believe great design should not only look beautiful but also support how families truly live in their homes. Our approach blends creativity with strong technical knowledge of construction and project management, allowing us to bridge the gap between design vision and successful execution. That collaboration with builders and contractors is a major part of what sets us apart.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Studio Rogue is built on authenticity and relationships. We focus on listening closely to our clients and designing spaces that feel like a true reflection of them rather than following trends. Readers should know that our studio is rooted in thoughtful details, strong communication, and creating spaces that feel both timeless and personal.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is the value of listening—both to clients and to the process itself. Great design isn’t just about creating something beautiful; it’s about understanding how people live, what matters most to them, and translating that into a space that truly supports their lifestyle. I’ve also learned that collaboration and clear communication are key to successful projects and strong relationships. Trusting the process, staying adaptable, and remembering that challenges are often opportunities for growth have all played a major role in shaping both my career and my approach to design.
