Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Roberts.
Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a child I would do family’s hair including my dad, who would let me while he read the paper: one night, it was his bowling league and I got to do his hair. My dad left for the bowling alley and stopped at the bar there to talk to some friends. One friend commented “Wow, you look pretty”My dad was very confused until his friend pulled a big purple barrette from the back of his head😂😂😂
Looking back, I’m pretty sure it’s the reason I was gifted a Barbie head asap – haha
I have always loved all things beautiful, shiny, pretty, different, extraordinary and in a way I feel like I’m helping a person feel better about themselves and their mind set.
I graduated from Aveda Institute, Minneapolis in 2000.
I apprenticed under an experienced stylist from Australia and then I moved to Duluth, MN working under the owner of Shear Katz in the Fitgers Hotel.
I then went out on my own and learned through the stepping stones/hard knocks of being a baby stylist- those years were rough, like boot camp!
I eventually married and lived in Idaho not working for a while.
When I moved back to MN, I rented a space at Mane Salon in Hibbing – at the time it was the only Aveda salon close to my residence.
I started my family and I had a little salon attached to my house so I could be with my children.
We moved again – I ended up back at Mane Salon, then True North Salon opened in Grand Rapids which was also an Aveda salon and closer for me.
I gained a loyal following and moved to another salon as Aveda switched to commission only and no longer would rent space to stylists.
While at PASH Salon, one of my good friends and clients wanted me to move into her office building.
I went and looked, it was a perfect salon suite and the over head would be way less. It was also ideal because my friend had a mini med spa, my other friend/client is an esthetician in that space also and we had already begun networking with eachother so it was definitely meant to be!
I opened my suite (Ann•A Beauty Salon) in September of 2023 and I have no regrets. I love my clients and I love meeting new ones as well.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It actually has been smooth except the only thing is, my space is an old historic building, which I love, but like an old house it can have its issues.
My space hasn’t really had any problems thus far 🤞🏻🤞🏻
It’s not very different from renting at salons I was at in the past. I still pay rent, my inventory, my tools but I’m in control while setting the vibe- it’s very relaxed and I hope my clients feel that too
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I LOVE Hair Color!!!
I feel very blessed to have attended a school that specialized in color theory, technique and color application.
I love doing blonde hair: foils, balayage, tip outs, glazes, etc.
I think I’m most proud of not quitting when things got really difficult and forging ahead in this career – it can be ruthless.
I think what sets me apart is my training, my perfectionism and being a good listener- I love learning about people and their lives/experiences.
What makes you happy?
Being on my own, providing for my family, helping my clients – when I get to my salon suite it makes me calm, happy and proud to be able to help people feel good, especially in this day and age.
