Exploring Life & Business with Josiah Newsom of Newsom Design Build

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiah Newsom.

Josiah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got my start working alongside my dad during high school – he was a renovator, and that’s where I first fell in love with the craft. After graduating, I pursued that passion, formerly and studied furniture, design and construction. Like a lot of craftsman, making a living purely, and Furniture was challenging, so I started taking small carpentry jobs. Overtime those jobs grew into full general contracting company. Today we offer full service general, contracting, and specialize in historical restoration and finish carpentry – Work that demands the same level of precision and care that drew me into Furniture making in the first place.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t smooth sailing at the start. Breaking into the field without any advertising or marketing was tough. I relied on referrals, which means every single job had to speak for itself.

But that approach, as slow as it was, ended up being the right one. After 17 years in Minneapolis, I’ve built a client based to provides tremendous amount of ongoing work and sends new clients my way regularly. That kind of trust is something you can’t buy.

Finding quality craftsman has been another real challenge. Historical restoration fine finish carpenter require a level of thoughtfulness and skill that’s genuinely hard to find. I’m proud to say I have a well vetted, crew and team of subcontractors I truly trust. People who share the same commitment to work that I do. That took time to build, but makes all the difference.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Newsom design build as a Minneapolis base general contracting company specializing in historical restoration and pure. Accurate finish carpentry. Living and working in Minneapolis most of the homes I work on were built in early to mid century and that historic work is what I love the most.

We are a full service general, contracting company from foundation up. My favorite projects are detailed wall paneling, coffered ceilings, elements that define the craftsmanship of the era.

What’ sets us apart is our commitment to accurate materials and techniques. I take time to learn a buildings historic features and look for era appropriate details to carry from original spaces in a home into newly renovated ones. The goal is always cohesion and character, so our renovation feels like it belongs to the house.

What matters most to you?
Honestly, it’s the relationships. I love the craft, but what keeps me going as the people. General contracting is an intimate business. Working inside someone’s home, around their family, touching something that they care about deeply.
