Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Hansen.
Hi Bethany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a physical therapist treating an orthopedic patient population at an outpatient hospital clinic. Very quickly I realized there was a need for specialists in pelvic health. I started out by shadowing other physical therapists with this specialty and realized how underserved this patient population was. My employer helped me pay for continued education courses in all areas of pelvic health – bowel and bladder dysfunction, pelvic pain, pregnancy and postpartum issues, prolapse, painful sex, etc. I worked at a few other outpatient clinics over the years and broadened my patient population to see all gender pelvic health issues. I decided to go on my own and start my business after my last employer limited patient care to 30 minute visits due to insurance reimbursement. I believe that quality care requires giving people time and space, especially when it comes to personal and sensitve issues with the pelvic floor. Now I see patients for an hour for each visit and don’t feel rushed or limited in the services I can provide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although I had good mentors, I did struggle with self doubt about my abilities as a PT and as a business owner. They don’t teach us any business education in graduate school, so I had to learn a lot of things along the way. I continue to learn from others in the field and find support from other pelvic floor PT small business owners.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a doctorate in Physical Therapy and have been working with patients for 22+ years. I am a solo private practice pelvic health physical therapy owner. I work for myself and do not have any other employees. I offer one-on-one, hour long sesssions, and work with people with various pelvic health issues, such as bladder and bowel dysfunction, pregnancy and postpartum issues, pelvic pain, painful sex, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, etc. Treatments often include manual therapy, education, exericse, and dry needling services.
