Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Bergeson.
Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I live in Northfield, Minnesota with my husband, Erik, and our four children—Torsten, Camden, Freya, and Knox. When I’m not in the studio, you’ll usually find me hiking, traveling with my family, watching volleyball, or enjoying time at Minnesota’s lakes up north.
I grew up in South Saint Paul and later attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where I had the opportunity to play volleyball for the Bulldogs. That experience shaped so much of who I am—instilling a strong sense of discipline, teamwork, and the drive to always keep improving. Those values have carried with me into every chapter of my career.
Over the years, I’ve followed a path that’s been both diverse and incredibly rewarding. I’ve been a teacher, coached Division I and II volleyball, traveled the country with my husband helping families rebuild their homes after major storms, and most recently I played a key role in building one of Minnesota’s largest exterior restoration companies, serving as CFO as we grew to $52 million at our peak. Each of these experiences strengthened my leadership skills, attention to detail, and passion for building something meaningful from the ground up.
In late 2025, I made the decision to open my own elective ultrasound studio—something that came into my life in a very unexpected way. At the time, I was expecting my fourth child, and after seeing the images my expecting cousin received at an elective ultrasound studio, I was immediately drawn in. It was the first time I had seen an experience like that outside of a standard clinical setting. She shared how special it was for her and her husband to bond with their baby, see them for the first time, and include her mom in that moment—and that really stayed with me.
From there, I started digging in. As I researched the market, I realized there were only a handful of these studios in Minnesota, while other metro areas across the country had them in nearly every major city. That gap sparked something in me. I found myself jotting down ideas, building out a profit and loss, and losing sleep thinking about all the ways I would create something truly exceptional.
I didn’t just want to open a studio—I wanted to build the most sought-after ultrasound experience in Minnesota. A place where expecting moms and their families could come not only to see their baby, but to create a moment they would remember forever.
From the very beginning, my vision for Lumina was clear: to create a boutique-style studio that offers far more than your typical ultrasound appointment. I wanted to build a space where every visit feels intentional, elevated, and deeply personal—where families walk away not just with images, but with a core memory.
I’m a firm believer in never standing still. I’m constantly investing in continuing education, refining imaging techniques, and thoughtfully curating every detail of the studio—from the technology we use to the keepsakes we offer and the atmosphere we create. I care deeply about making sure every family who walks through our doors feels welcomed, cared for, and genuinely celebrated.
Above all, my goal is simple: to provide beautiful images and videos of their baby while creating one of the warmest, happiest, and most memorable experiences this industry has to offer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The elective ultrasound studio model is still relatively new in many parts of Minnesota. Typically businesses are competing in already saturated markets, but this industry is really the opposite. It’s such a unique niche that many expecting families don’t even realize it exists.
In larger metro areas across the country, boutique studios are widely recognized and embraced. Here, though, a big part of my journey has been simply getting the word out, reaching people, helping them understand what we offer, and showing the value of that extra bonding experience beyond the standard medical ultrasounds.
Because of that, I’ve had to jump in and learn quickly when it comes to building awareness through social media, local events, and community involvement. Figuring out how to create content across Facebook, Google, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok that’s not just informative but genuinely engaging has been a big challenge. From creating reels and stories, scheduling posts for peak times, navigating editing tools like Canva and Edits, using the right hashtags, researching keywords- the list goes on! It’s been a lot to take in, but also an incredible and rewarding learning process.

This is a core memory. It is so special. Mom and her guests should feel deeply connected with their baby in this moment. It should feel perfect in every way. What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Learning to accept that not everything has to be perfect before launching, posting, or commenting has been a big challenge for me. Honestly, I still struggle with the urge to re-read, edit, and seek multiple opinions before pulling the trigger on a decision.
