Exploring Life & Business with Michael Serbus of Intech Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Serbus.

Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is about taking a family foundation, questioning it, and turning hard-earned experience into something more refined and scalable.

I have to say, very privilegedly, that entrepreneurship was never foreign to me. I grew up around it. More than 55 years ago, my grandpa started an electrical business, and my dad later built his own electrical contracting business. From an early age, I was around the trade, around job sites, and around the realities of building something from the ground up. But that kind of upbringing is a double-edged sword. It gave me a head start, but it also meant I inherited habits, assumptions, and ways of doing things that I later had to unlearn in order to grow.

In 2012, at just 16 years old, I started my own business in energy management, Intech Corporation, focusing mostly on commercial LED retrofits. Early on, it was raw. We did not advertise, we relied almost entirely on word of mouth, and business was often feast or famine. Quality control was not yet the obsession it is today. At that stage, it was more about getting through the next opportunity than building a polished machine.

That changed as I got older. I studied business marketing in college, earned my BA, and started looking at the business through a very different lens. I became far more intentional about systems, standards, customer experience, and growth. Soon, my old ways became outright unacceptable to me. Once I started running ads and religiously applying stronger business practices, the company took off.

What began with changing lightbulbs grew into facilitating larger projects like solar, EV chargers, and remodeling. What began as a scrappy young business has matured into something far more disciplined. Today, I am proud to say every review we have ever received is 5 stars without exception (Shameless plug: you can find us on Yelp or Google). To me, that is the real marker of growth, and a tangible reflection of the value we bring to the industry and our community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of the struggle was taking something that began rough around the edges and forcing it to mature, tightening the systems, raising the standard, and learning that hustle gets you started, but discipline is what makes a business last. Early on, the business was all word of mouth, no advertising, and very feast or famine, so some months felt full of momentum and others felt painfully quiet. I started young, which gave me a head start, but it also meant I was learning hard lessons in real time about quality control, customer experience, consistency, and what it actually takes to build something sustainable instead of just chasing the next job.

As you know, we’re big fans of Intech Corporation. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Intech Corporation is a general contracting business with a focus on facilitating electrical work. We specialize in energy management, and are best known for solar and remodeling. What sets us apart is, by design, the same things that we find the industry lacks: thorough communication, clearly defined objectives, consideration of our customers time, gratitude for the business, and going above and beyond when possible. I know a lot of that is kind of… basic. Although, for some reason, it seems to set us apart. Just this week, a customer told us “You are amazing – thank you! [Redacted] was very impressed with your professionalism and can do attitude. I can’t tell you how refreshing that is. Every Electrician that we had on the job with the GC I felt like his answer was always no or negative, so thank you for staying positive”. Unlike many contractiors, we also care enough to explore various government incentives, like rebates and credits offered by the utility. In fact, right now, Xcel is offering up to a $1500 rebate for electrical panel upgrades in certain circumstances. We recommend people take advantage of that. We offer electrical panel upgrades, as well as EV chargers, appliance installs, GFCI/AFCI outlet upgrades, whole or partial home rewiring, smart home upgrades, and much more.
