Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Olson.
Hi Derrick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started doing everything by hand over 12 years ago. With nothing but a dremel tool, some acrylic, endless ideas, and a vision.
Today… I am heading into the 6th year at the MN State Fair, have 2 laser machines that duplicate not only my original art… but can work with ANY business customizing their logo on an endless number of products. I just got done doing some commissioned work for Ice Castle Fish Houses. That was a dream collaboration for me!
This is now my full time job and soon will be looking for help.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. I guess you could say for the first 8 to 10 years of creating my designs, it went relatively smooth. I now realize that was only because it was a part time hobby for me.
Once I quit my other job to take this on full time in 2024, it has shown it’s challenges to say the least. I was very naive to what it takes to actually start, run, and grow a successful business.
One of my biggest obstacles was getting my Facebook business page hacked last year. I had over 8,000 customers that I built up for over 10 years… GONE! In an instant. A large majority of orders came from my facebook page so that felt like the biggest gut punch imaginable at the time. Especially after working my butt off to build that page to where I did. Thousands upon thousands of custom designs were in that page.
After fighting for 6 months to get it back, I finally got access back and am happy to say I have my Facebook page back!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in hand enraved original LED designs. I can work from personal photos, logos, ideas…or a combination of all 3. If you can think it, I can create it. It’s like doing a tattoo on acrylic is the best way I can describe my custom creations!
Outside of that, with my laser engraving process. I can work with ANY business doing custom designs and merchandise for them to grow their brand. I LOVE working with other businesses!
What matters most to you?
Creating a legacy for my 2 year old daughter. I want to prove to her that manifestation is very real and powerful tool!
